Any of you older posters remember him? How good was he? What style of player was he - any around today that you could compare him too?

Super Lou, What a great player he was. Part of a very underrated team alongside Steve Coppell and Sammy Mcllroy..The team with a bit of luck could have won the league much earlier if it wasn't for the managerial instability during the 70's and 80's.

helped stopped them scouse cnuts doing the treble in 1977 by beating them in that seasons cup final , surely that makes him a legend in his own right !

Bought by Tommy Docherty from Celtic for £200,000 Lou Macari was an excellent player for United. He was a useful attacking midfield player who could also play alongside our big centre forwards like Stuart Pearson and Joe Jordan. He would generally contribute with around a dozen goals per season. Lou made the number 10 shirt his own during the mid - late 70's and early 80's and became a fans favourite with his tireless effort and work rate. Most fans will remember his 'wild' shot (probably heading for row Z) that cannoned off Jimmy Greenhoff and into the net to give us the Cup Final win in 77, but his most memorable moment for me was when he came on as a sub against Everton in the FA Cup 6th round game at OT in 82-83. With the final whistle not far away Lou cleverly chested a difficult pass onto Frank Stapleton who smashed a volley into the top corner of the net at the Stretford End to give us a 1-0 win and set us up with a semi final against Arsenal at Villa Park.... Lou Lou Skip to my Lou....

Yeah a Stuart Pearson shot hit Lou on the chest (right on the united badge) and went in!!

Wasn´t it Macari´s shot, and didn´t it hit Jimmy Greenhoff in the chest? Pearson scored the first goal of the game.

I read his new autobiography is very good. 4 star review in FourFourTwo.

I never knew that his son killed himself at the age of 19.

I thought it was Lou who scored the goal against Everton in 83? At the time he'd earned the nickname "The Judge" as he'd sit on the bench more often than anyone else.

For one so small, he had an incredible ability to get headers, to use the pundit's phraseology, he'd hang in the air forever for a cross coming in. This was always handy at United at the time, as we had the likes of Gordon Hill, Mickey Thomas, Arnold Murhen and of course Steve Coppell pinging crosses in for all and sundry to get onto.

I can't think of any player around today who to compare Lou to directly. Defoe would be the shorter forward to compare too, but he's got more pace and natural ability. Lou, was more your very good footballer who worked even harder to make it as a pro.

spring-heeled, effervescent and nippy. That was Lou. Hard worker too with a fair bit of ability. As aforementioned, amazing aerial ability for a little fella. Everyone was saying he'd make us forget about losing Georgie at the time because he was so good. Well, he wasn't quite that good but then again, who was? Always remember his debut at home to West Ham and he scored on his debut. The song "who put the ball in the West Ham net......skip to ma Lou Macari" was born. Had a cracking debut. Top player. Get a dvd from that era - we had some excellent, entertaining players and were a good side. Just not good enough to win the title although we came close a couple of times. Some epic games from theat era.

I will never ever forget that goal, even though I was only listening to commentary on the BBC World Service. The radio speakers almost exploded from the noise from OT. Saw the goal on TV only a few days later and it was a beauty.
No internet, no streams, no live footy on the telly, scousers winning major trophies...I'm glad some people around here are old enough to remind you all that...

Macari's goal, all right, although some has it registered as Greenhoff's.

Lou always had a nack for decisive goals. His goal against West Ham secured the promotion to Division 1 in 74/75.

Lou is my all time favourite United player.

I'll never forget that day. We were a decent enough side but Everton were all over us that day. They just couldn't score. They also brought maybe the biggest, certainly the most vocal following I can remember to OT. We were just getting a foothold into the game late 2nd half and Ron threw Lou on as a sub. The rest is history. The wee man teed up Stapleton for the winner and "you're not going to Wembley, You're not going to Wembley, na naa naa na" vibrated around the ground.

Fookin ace. :D

Macari the player > Macari the pundit

Macari The Player > Macari The Manager > Macari The Fish And Chip Mogule > Macari The Pundit.

Did amazing things with Swindon Town, bad luck he didn't get credited for taking them up four full divisions due too shady business on the Swindon board.

A swedish paper said that game should have ended 5-5. Never got the impression that Everton outplayed us. I listened alot to the radio in those days since United was only showned on the TV once or twice a season but missed this cracker somehow. Last year the only game not showned was Derby away. Times change

This is correct. Everton were having a very poor season up to that point and most pundits gave them little if any chance of beating us. As it transpired they played well above themselves and were well worth a draw to be fair.
Lou had gained a reputation that year as being our super-sub. Can't remember which games but he scored some vital goals for us coming off the bench that season. So much so that when he came off the bench against Everton most of us expected something to happen and loh and behold it did. Still remember meeting my Everton mates after the match - never seen 2 people look so gutted. Almost felt sorry for them - almost!

I think Lou & Tevez' style are quite similar, thou Lou spent more time in midfield......... similar in physical stature as well.
As for his pint-size stature, Lou got up amazing heights to head a ball, & scored many goals for Utd., with his head!....... one of my fav. players from the 70's!

I don't say this lightly, but Everton were definitely the better team on the day - we only woke up late in the game. We were used to dominating home games on the whole but we didn't this one.

fair comparison both perpetual motion but think Lou was a bit quicker - I've always liked Stuart Hall's description of him as a "wasp of a player"

He always folded the top of his socks in such a way that the white band was not visible showing only red and black.

At the age of 12 I thought was very cool so I copied him, he became my favourite player for many years.
