Manchester United are poised to raid cash-strapped Lazio for Claudio Lopez, according to a report.
The Daily Express newspaper claims the £25m-rated striker is ready to walk out on Lazio, who have fallen behind with players' wages.
And United may be able to lure the Argentine World Cup star on a free transfer because of the Rome club's parlous financial affairs.
Lopez is said to have started legal moves to leave Lazio without the Serie A side being able to claim any form of compensation.
Chelsea are also believed to be interested in bringing Lopez to England, with manager Claudio Ranieri keen to sign the player he coached at Valencia.
But international team-mate Juan Sebastian Veron could persuade Lopez to join him at Old Trafford.
Jaap Stam has joined Lopez in demanding a move.
"Lazio have told the players we must sign the new contracts offers by the end of the week or we will placed on the transfer list," said Stam.
"The new offer is totally unacceptable and unless something changes, I will definitely not be signing it. If that means I am not a Lazio player next season, so be it.
"The club's offer is to pay the remaining four months of the players' salaries for this season in shares in the club.
"Secondly, they want all the squad to agree to a 45% cut in their contract terms for next season. This offer is laughable.
"The club is in a difficult position, but I cannot go to the supermarket and buy groceries for family with shares.
"I will not be held to ransom by the club. My position is clear. If the club do not rethink their proposal, I will go on the transfer list.
"And I will be very interested to see which other clubs believe I am worth a contract for next season."
