From ManUtd.com:
Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed Wes Brown as “one of the best young centre halves in the game” after the 23-year-old made his first team comeback against West Ham at Upton Park.
It was almost three months to the day since Wes suffered a broken ankle against Zalaegerseg on 14 August, and Ferguson admitted to being nervous about throwing the youngster in against the Hammers having played only 58 minutes of reserve team football.
But Brown came through and Fergie was delighted, Sir Alex said: "Wes Brown has proved what we have all said about him, that he is one of the best young centre halves in the league.
"He came in but there was no risk in my mind because the boy has ability and we are all delighted for him.
"Wes has had a tragedy of a career. The last three years have been a disaster for the kid. Hopefully, he will get the luck he needs now because he is still a fantastic young defender."
For Wes Brown himself, who has just become a father for the first time, it is a case of looking toward an injury-free future.
Wes told the Manchester Evening News: "I just hope I don't get any more injuries. I just want to stay fit and keep my place in the first team now.
"Injuries are just one of those things that happen unfortunately but has been happening too much to me and also the team recently.
The 23-year-old defender hasn’t been alone in the treatment room this season with seven United players needing operations this term.
Wes needs games, and despite being thrown in at the deep end on Sunday, he says he felt in good shape after a tough training programme.
"I felt all right against West Ham. I have been training fully for the last two weeks but I just haven't got games under my belt so it was good to get the 90 minutes.
"I wasn't being held back it was just a case of how I felt. Some days the ankle was sore and so I would ease off in training and do something lighter.
"But for the last week I was training every day. I still get a tiny bit of pain. It is more of an ache occasionally than anything else but it won't bother me.
Wes Brown’s last game for United ended with a last-gasp goal as United lost 1-0 in the Champions League preliminary round. And on his return to the side it was a late goal that saw the Reds surrender three points for just one at Upton Park, so it was something of a bittersweet Sunday afternoon for the United star.
"I was pleased that I came back okay," said the young United defender. "But I am just disappointed because we held out for 86 minutes and then they get a late goal. We just didn't hold it at the end.
"We stayed up and held the 18-yard line but Jermain looked a good couple of yards offside as he went through.
"It was disappointing the linesman didn't see it and it spoiled the day," Brown added.
