The defence picks itself, seeing as we have only 3 fit defenders, plus Phil Neville.. ;)

I do hope that Sir Alex sticks to what he's said about Butt though, and puts him in there instead of Veron, because you can be sure WBA will mix it.

Brown's injury has me worried, as I do not have much faith in Phil Neville anymore. Shouldn't be a problem against teams like WBA, but the game against Chelsea a week tomorrow could be a headache.

I hope we start with the following team Vs WBA:

-------------Carroll
Neville--O'Shea--Blanc--Silvestre
Scholes--Butt--Keano--Giggs
----------Ole--Ruud

I would think that after losing to the Hungarians last night we won't hear that kind of statements anymore...

There's no such thing as 'no problem against'. WBA are a Premiership side and we all know opening days usually see the top sides struggle. It's going to be a very hard battle and hopefully we can get a good start

so were starting this season weaker than we finished last season?

great

Based on what ? Last night's performance ? Isn't it a bit too early to be panicking and overhauling the lineups ? Also, I see you have Scholes playing on the right instead of Beckham, which makes zero sense since Scholes doesn't posses the crossing or dead ball skills that Becks does. It would make us completely impotent on the right imo.

All the more Beckham should start. <img src="graemlins/smirk.gif" border="0" alt="[Smirk]" /> IMO, it's better to have real wingers than make-shift ones.

I reckon players such as Beckham and Owen may struggle for the first couple of weeks or so of the season...due to their involvement in the WC when they weren't 100% fit...Owen for example has had little involvement pre season...

But I also think that match practise is the only way to get them sharp again...so I'm hoping Owen is put straight back in...

I'll be more than happy if you play the lesser Scholes out of position to rest Beckham

Based on the experience from watching WBA a couple of times last season. They are a very hrd working team, with a couple of tough tackling players in the middle, and are very good at closing down players early. Veron thrives when he has time on the ball, which he won't get on Saturday. If we play Butt, we can give Keano the opportunity to get at them with his energetic play. Playing Butt and Keane in the middle will make sure we don't get out-battled by a team which usually are good battlers, and will be even more so on Saturday because 1) it's their first Premiership game and 2) it's against us.

Do you reckon playing Scholes instead of Beckham will make us even more impotent on the right than we were last night? Beckham doesn't look fit to me at all, and I reckon he should have another month off.

I think he lacks match practice myself..

I don't think his foot is 100%

If he needs match practise, give him a few reserve games

If fitness is the issue then he certainly does need to take a rest, but that wont necessarily make us better on the RW. I'd rather see a healthy Chadwick running at defenders on the right, than Scholes. Can't argue with Butt and Keano, though it would definitely not solve our goal drought. We need Seba's playmaking ability somewhere in the lineup.

Something like this would probably work:

------------- RC -------------

------ JOS ---- LB ----- MS --

----- RK ----------- NB ------

---- DF ------- JSV ----- RG -

-------- RVN ------- OGS -----

I don't think any of us is in the position to assume Beckham's foot is not 100 percent. If it wasn't, surely he would not be playing.

No it wouldn't - we would get murdered on the flanks

I'd also be happy to see either Chadwick or Forlan replacing Beckham..

What would you lot do without the objective view of a neutral like myself?

;)

I'm sorry you don't like to discuss football with me after you lose...

Where's all your funny faces and "witty" quips that come up when we lose?

But I agree with your view that Veron shouldn't be risked against WBA..on the grounds that they're likely to dominate the midfield if he plays

Midlands has probably received some inside info on the condition of Beckham's foot..

;)

Which begs the question, if Veron and Keane are no match for the Baggies midfield, just how in the feck are we going to cope with Arsenal, Liverpool or any of the other 16 clubs in the PL?

You can strategize all you want, put out all kinds of formations but it all doesn't matter cos its the gaffers's decision at the end of the day. I am sure he doesn't sit around the RedCafe forum looking for inspiration. So I suggest you guys just sit back buckle up and enjoy what is sure to be a rollercoaster helluva season (and after the ZTE result all indications are there!)
