Not knocking the idea, but we really do have to use two recognised strikers - we need a partnership.

Last season Ruud and Ole scored 61 between them, either as a result of interplay between the two, or simply because another striker was there if the first one missed an an opportunity. This season, Ruud has become visibly tired, and Ole has been played all over the pitch. We need goals, and goals should come more easily if we give the partnership the chance to gel again.

Also, for the amount of high balls that we put in, we need Ruud up there - he can't fight off two defenders week in, week out.

The 4-5-1 has its place, but at home, we should be going for the jugular.

Scholes to partner Ruud up front is obviously what Fergie want to go for. I can understand this, because if I ask myelf who'd I drop from Keano, Veron and Scholes in the CM, I also cannot find a answer.

Too many good players and too few positions to play them in. Forlan's been unlucky not to be played more this season.

Not saying its an easy answer. But Ruud will be knackered at a time when we need him most if we persist in playing him up on his own.

That's not in dispute.

And if the midfield are going to have a less productive game, all the more reason why one striker shouldn't be up there trying to do it by himself.

This isn't a thread to knock either system, but unless we're going to get another physical striker, Ruud will be worn out by March/April.

Yes, he is the type of striker who needs supplies. As long as there are supplies from midfield, who does he partner with is not a big problem.

As long as it's a proven striker.

Rebrov anyone?

TBH i think Veron should have started, phil did well...but he's just a defensive player....we lacked creativity....and they overran us in the middle, especially in the first half.

IF we are to play this formation at home, its important that we play seba... this way it will benefit Ruud or whoever's playing the lone striker role.

No - he's a good player, and he's cheap. And he's not cup-tied.

How many times do players who have failed at other clubs go on to succeed elsewhere.

Worth a gamble I'd say - and he wouldn't be insisting on starting every game because he'd just be grateful to be part of it I would think!

I think Veron may have been injured and not fit enough to play 90 minutes, otherwise there is no reason why Fergie prefer to start with Phil.

Well, you know I'm going to agree with this. That first half, we barely saw Ruud. Not knocking him because it's very hard playing up front by yourself. I just don't think it's any coincidence that RVN hasn't been scoring as freely in the league this year when we've been using 4-5-1 a lot more. Just doesn't make sense to me to buy a great goal-scorer like Ruud and then not fully take advantage of his goal scoring ability. We give the poor guy a mountain to climb every week.

Agree! A non cup-tied forward, with plenty of Champions League experience! And we're talking about 1 to 2 million pounds! Definitely worths the gamble!

I am all for it also. He'll jumped at the chance of leaving white liver lane.

Already talked about in the Transfer Talk forum. He reminds me of Yorke in that he's gone half a season without playing, and barely managed to score a goal last season. Nowhere near good enough, the gamble was taken by Spurs and it failed for them miserably.

Is anyone from our reserve good enough to worth a try? Such as Davis, Nardello, etc.?
