Liverpool are poised to make a £12m offer for Blackburn winger Damien Duff, despite missing out on the Champions League jackpot.
According to reports, Reds boss Gerard Houllier has been promised funds to strengthen his squad, and Duff is his primary target.
Rovers have already rejected a £10m offer for the 24-year-old.
But Liverpool are now preparing another swoop for the Republic of Ireland star, who has also been linked to Manchester United.
Blackburn boss Graeme Souness is already resigned to losing Duff, but he has stated that only a "ridiculous offer" would lead to a definite deal.
Duff signed a new deal a year ago, but it is widely though that he negotiated a £15m escape clause.
Houllier is optimistic that Duff will provide the width that was conspicuous by its absence this season, while chief executive Rick Parry has promised signings who will have fans "on the edge of their seats".

Other rumours today link us with a 1.3m bid for Basel's Hakan Yakin and a move for West Ham's Trevor Sinclair.
