He should win the World Cup with Argentina to be regarded as THE best ever. You can point out that Best and De Stefano never won it either, but Messi is playing for a much stronger national team. Even if he wins the world cup, Maradona will still be regarded as the best ever by most. I personally don't think any single player can claim to be the best ever. I'd rather pick an all time 22 and Messi will be definitely there by the time he retires if he doesn't feck up.
The greatest player is impossible to tell as there are so many things to analyse so I would say no .

Team success doesn't really translate that well if we're looking at an individual. Yes, it will obviously be brilliant for his CV, but I honestly wouldn't think any different of Messi if he was to never (or to) win the World Cup.
I'd be more interested in how he performed at the WC, rather than how Argentina fared.

Our very own Ronaldo is a winger-cum-forward who scored 42 goals in a season. Who has won consecutive league titles and a European Cup and is continually getting to the latter stages of major tournaments whilst making a big impact in those.

Fact is, the notion of potential is totally intangible. How do we know how much potential Messi has in comparison to Ronaldo? Any prediction on potential is mere conjecture.
Right now Messi is on a different level to Ronaldo. Ronaldo had a great run last season with his goals but didn't cover himself in glory at the end of the season. Ineffective and almost cost united the champions league with his penalty misses and abject performances in the latter stages. Failed to turn up for Portugal in the euros whilst Messi got back to fitness and was in good form towards the end of the season, picked up a gold medal and player of the tournament at the olympics and has so far this season been the best in the world.
Comparing them at the same age is a good way to see potential ,it doesn't mean (fortunately so) that things will happen for sure but it's just an indication of what could happen.

Its called form mate, Messi has been in form from the start of the season and truth be told at times he has been magical to watch. But it is blasphemous to claim that he is the greatest ever. I used to watch Barca a lot before last season and I recall a certain Ronaldinho being close to unplayable in 2004-2006
