Marca say they've got a copy of the club wage bills as given to the LFP

Impressive stuff. I'll add some commentary later.

They are about to start redressing the balance though I believe - more of the TV money is to be more evenly distributed if I remember correctly? Long overdue as the league is a bit of a joke when you see figures like this. Same all over Europe though of course.

Using the last published figures it's something like 4:1 (United's £181m to Wigans £44m) or 5 to 1 if use City's wagebill of £233m.
That's around 55m Euro, right? So Wigan pay more wages than Athletic and Villareal? I think that's actually more shocking than the gap between Barca and Almeria .

It is, but the issue of competitiveness will scarcely be touched. Barcelona and Real Madrid are giant clubs, even if they lose some (or even all) of their TV income they would still dwarf the other Liga clubs in economic terms. They argue that all that would really be achieved is that they would become less competitive in Europe and La Liga would be stripped of its stars.

The problem for La Liga in adopting a PL style TV shareout model (even if the big-two are forced to accept it) is that Atletico, Valencia and Athletic would also see their earnings fall. There's a real possibility that competition and quality in the top 6 would go down rather than up.

The Wigan versus Villareal conparison is interesting actually. Vila-real is actually a small town of around 50000 people (although not sure whether they count Castellon inhabitants within their catchment area which would bump the number up by about 180k) whereas Wigan has a population of 100000 and I would say is in a more populous area. The two teams in the towns have similar sized stadia and attract similar crowds.

That Villareal the football team have done as well as they have says more to me about the general weakness of La Liga. They are backed by the Mercadona guy who is very rich. Similarly Wigan were backed by the JJB guy, but the latter have no real hope of ever finishing in the top 5 in England.
