So after these few matches a lot of fans realized that Scholes' importance in our team. Some even think that if he hasn't been injured we'd have picked up a few more pts. The question is: as such an important player for us, where should we put him in our team?

Before last week I think 90% of us would agree Scholes is better as a midfielder than as a forward. However the CL match last Tuesday ignite the hope that Scholes can finally settle down as a forward. But then, in the Everton game it seems everything has "resumed" to the previous situation. Veron was still ineffective and Scholes still played much better when returned to midfield.

For me I see Scholes as one of the most all-rounded player I've never seen. He can pass long or short, dribble, tackle, shoot, head,... Besides, his shooting outside the box and his ability to get into the box at the right time is nearly second to none. However, this ability can only produce its greatest effect when there are two forwards to drap away defenders in front of him. Also, being a forward will also waste a lot his all-rounded ability as a midfielder.

What do you think about it?
1. Scholes should be midfielder
2. Scholes should be forward
3. Can't care less. He can play in both position equally well, and with the same effect.
4. He should be sold or benched.
What is your choice?

Due to us having plenty of midfielders and few forwards i think he should be used primarily up front.
The formation worked grand last night, we created severl chances and were tight enough at the back.
Then when we didnt take our chances we changed to a slightly more attacking formation and eventually broke them down.
Had we started with 442, scholes in midfield and still not taken our chances it would have been harder to change to a more attacking option with opening up our own defence.
off the point i know but option nr 3 for me, scholes for both.

Depends on the opposition, but I do prefer him in midfield, I think he finds it easier to scores when running from deep, rather than as a target man - which he clearly isn't. If he is in midfield, he should have license to get forward though, with Butt or Keane holding the fort and protecting the defence.

As AEBM: It has 2b 3. His versatility is 1 of his great strengths. we need him as a forward sometimes at the moment & he's up to the job. When we get the strikers we really need he will be able to move effortlessly back to his more familiar role

With his ability he can do well in both positions but I think we need him more in midfield. Last night when he resumed to MF position our whole team suddenly looked much more connected and played more comfortably. He made good decisions on when/where to pass/dribble and he has the ability to get everyone involved, create team movements and set the team into a good shape for attack.

I also think playing him as a forward is a waste and that brings up the 4th striker issue again.

The way it worked last nite gives us more options. Its easier for him to drop back into midfield than move from midfield to attack.
He seems more determined to make a go as playing as the second striker this season

IMHO there is one single reason Scholes dilemma exists. We all love Ole but I’m afraid he’s still not first choice class but a supersub. So we have in the first choice team only RVN up front and Paul have to be second striker sometimes.
My suggestion is to try and buy another world class forward this winter. So Scholes could play midfielder again. I think he does his best in this position.

In an ideal world, I'd have Scholes in the centre of midfield every time. But necessity dictates that we need his services elsewhere from time to time.

BTW is anyone seriously going to vote for option 4?? <img src="graemlins/houllier.gif" border="0" alt="[Houllier]" />

So in conclusion about half of the voter chose "1" and the remaining half chose "3". Some points which can be deducted are:
1. No one think Scholes is more suitable a forward than a midfielder.
2. No one think Scholes should not start for us.
3. For the majority of the people who chose "3", they felt that we need him as forward now because we don't have enough forward at the moment, but if we can get a new player then he's still better to play in the midfield.

So hope Fergie really buy a new forward later! :)

Scholes is best to play centre attacking midfield parthering either butt or veron who will play in lower field feeding ball to scholes, giggs and beckham and defense to opponent's midfielder.
scholes, giggs and beckham will take role to assist Solskjaer and Nistelrooy or scores.

Yes, that's total coincidence of course. ;) It's just so funny that when you can't prove he has performed well by the matches he has played in, you resort to the matches he hasn't played! <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

For me Scholes should be in CM, i think he is capable of both positions but id rather him in midfield with a new big gun striker to relieve some pressure up front. Its great that he is so versatile, its a real bonus to the club, good onya Scholesy!

For me Fergie is doing exactly the right thing. He's playing Scholes further up in an attacking role in order not only to forge an attacking partnership with RVN but also to accommodate Veron who might otherwise be left on the bench. Alternatively it's a straight choice between Scholes and Veron in midfield. Veron is always capable of something special without, so far anyway, dominating an entire match. Scholes has confirmed Fergie's faith in him as a striker with some excellent goals. Unfortunately it mean Ole stays on the bench but he's probably a better impact player anyway. Furthermore it means the need for an additional striker to be brought in is less imperative particularly if Forlan, given an extended run in the reserves to re build his confidence, may prove to be a striker of note after all. Attacking problems solved perhaps.

well.. it depends on how Sir. Alex set our game like.. if he wants that to be 4-4-2, then hopefully scholes will be one of the forwards, but in 4-5-1, he gotta be the midfielder.

Now we are only operating with 3 strikers instead of 4 it makes sense to lump the little ginger Zidane lookalike in with the rest of the forwards, especially now he has at last seemingly come to terms with the position.
The knock-on effect with everyone fit is the midfield wouldn't seem quite so crowded. Promoting Scholsey up-field, as it were, would take us back to a pool of 4 forwards and allow the midfield, Veron in particular, a little more elbow room.
It's already started to work.
People have said Veron and Keane can't play together. ...that Seba defers to Keano too much. There is something in that to a degree, but I would contend it's not as serious a problem as Veron and Scholes tripping over each other's bootlaces in midfield, trying to play the same role in the same space.
Ultimately we still do need a 4th striker...someone who can make a fist of playing the RVN role.
It's just a crying shame in our time of need(transfer window shut and money tight anyway) the Academy has seemingly nothing to offer. What price a modern day Norman Whiteside or Mark Hughes...Christ!...even a 19 year old Andy Ritchie?

Scholes has always played as the most advanced of our midfield so all Sir Alex is doing is relieving him of his defenseive duties by playing another midfielder behind him.
A lot of the talk about formation is a bit strange. We have never had a digid formation anyway, remember 1994 when our formation was more like 4-2-4 than 4-4-2. We have quality all over the field and Sir Alex has never stopped the player from moving freely around the field as long as no gaps are left. Giggs and Ole regularly change positions as did Giggsy and Cole in a few European matches.
Scholes seems happier with his role this year and Ruud has already got 9 goals so whats the problem

I think we may have to adapt our lineups for CL and Premiership games accordingly. Scholes Definetly CM in Prem, but maybe in SOME (not all) in Europe according to who we are playing, employ him in a more advanced role. I think he looked good in The Olympikakos game, as did Veron. People have said this may have to do with the fact that our opposition wasn't the best, but they did give Bayer Lev a good thrashing. I think the pace of play in Europe suits Veron more and if Fergie thinks he can get any change out of him he will play him in the mid role, in which case he would push Scholes up.

Personally I think we play better with a 4-4-2 formation, but come the transfer window opening who knows what tricks SAF has in mind.

How about everyone's opinion now? Especially for those who said Scholes should play up front, do anyone want to change their choice now?

scholes is the engine for england and 4 Man Utd (if keano isnt there, but preferbely kean0) so y would u say too get rid of him when he is one of or best 5 players?

and y would he want 2 go 2 inter anyways??? <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[No No]" /> <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[No No]" /> <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[No No]" /> <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[No No]" />
