Manchester United's Martin Ferguson scouted Leo Baptistao last night and wants the club to buy him.

Several outlets in Spain, including national newspaper AS, are reporting that Martin Ferguson was last night in Spain scouting for Manchester United. The brother of the club's manager has been spotted scouting in Spain several times over the last few months and each time it brings speculation and intrigue over who he's been watching. AS claim that this time it was Leo Baptistao.

everal Spanish outlets are also carrying a picture of Martin Ferguson alongside the story (see left), which we assume was taken at the match and is their 'proof' of him being there.

Baptistao plays for Madrid club Rayo Vallecano and Ferguson was at the Campo de Fútbol de Vallecas last night to watch the team take on Getafe. AS say that Ferguson was so impressed with the player that he's 'recommended the club sign him as a replacement for Javier Hernández'.

The last bit seems a bit of a leap of faith, Martin Ferguson's recommendations would surely not be shared with the Spanish media, but that he was at the match does demonstrate an interest in someone.

Leo Baptistao has been the subject of rumours of a move to Atletico Madrid recently and he has a buyout clause of just €2m which makes a move all the more attractive. There's no public suggestion of Hernandez going anywhere, but if he did then a move for Leo Baptistao could be on the cards. He's only 20 years old and has scored 6 La Liga goals so far this season after coming through the second team at Rayo Vallecano, a club he moved from Brazil to join at the age of just 16.

He returned to Brazil after contracting a virus but made his way back to Rayo Vallecano and continued his rise through their system with his real breakthrough coming this season.

We watch hundreds of players, I would be surprised if we signed another striker at this point.

Are journalists really that lazy now that they dont even bother to link a player away before linking us to their replacement?

2 million euro release clause and he has 6 goals in 6 games. Could be Worth a punt tbh.

Haven't seen much though.

Did anyone read the articles on Soccernet and AS? It's hilarious

From AS:
Manchester United are believed to be interested in signing Rayo Vallecano's Brazilian forward Leo Baptistao, after Sir Alex Ferguson's brother Martin was spotted in the Estadio de Vallecas on Monday night, watching the player in action against Getafe.

Martin Ferguson would have been impressed with what he saw, as Leo helped Rayo romp to a dominant 3-1 win over their Madrid neighbours. Atlético Madrid are also interested in singing Leo, but now United know they could land the player for just two million euros, and Martin Ferguson has recommended the club sign him as a replacement for Javier Hernández, who cannot hold down a place in the first team and who they are expected to receive a number of offers for in the summer.

From Socnet:
Manchester United have reportedly joined the race to sign Rayo Vallecano starlet Leo Baptistao, however Atletico Madrid remains the most likely destination for the player, who has notched six goals and five assists already in his debut Primera Division season.

According to AS, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson attended Rayo's 3-1 win over Getafe on Monday to take a closer look at Leo, 20.

Representatives from Liverpool, QPR, Leeds, and Brighton were also spotted at the game, in which the Brazilian attacker again impressed with a superb all-round performance which included the assist for his side's third goal.

However, Leo's English suitors could be set for disappointment, as Spanish radio station Cadena Cope reported last week that Atletico had already reached a €6 million agreement to sign the player in the summer.

Leo joined Rayo's youth set-up in 2008, aged just 16, after coming to prominence playing indoor football in Brazil alongside boyhood friend Neymar. His development in Madrid was set back by hepatitis and two serious collarbone injuries, so he only made his first-team debut at Real Betis in August, when he announced his arrival with a goal and an assist.

His form since has been a revelation, indirectly filling the gap left by current Swansea sensation Michu, who scored 17 times for the Vallecas club last season before leaving for Wales for just €2.5 million in the summer.

Rayo are said to be keen not to let Leo leave for such a low fee and AS say his contract, which ends in 2015, contains an €8 million release clause.

Was there as part of the Macheda loan deal. Usual bullshit in the media

Or the Macheda deal rumours could be coming out of this. 3/4 clubs being linked with him.

We watch many players anyway, so no big deal but he could be watching him too.

Haven't seen much though.

He's scored 6 in 16 matches and chipped in with 6 assists.

I've only seen him play once, I think that was when Rayo lost to Barca. So didn't really see much of him in an attacking sense. But I think he played behind the main striker on that occasion.

He has been a bit of a sensation for a young player but obviously we arent looking at strikers to sign. If he was there to look at someone it could easily have been Jordi Amat a CB thats 20 or something more along those lines.

Unless he's really something special I can't see why we'd sign another striker.

For 2 million euros could be a Manucho, Diouf type of punt signing, who is then loaned.

With strikers and us can never rule it out. :p

I think with his form he could play for some of the best teams in la liga. So why would he want to take the Manucho or Diouf route?

Not exactly that route, but we could buy him and keep him at Rayo. He gets a wage increase and can make it with us, if he keeps up his development.

Maybe loan him to a bigger club next season. It's like why Courtouis moved to Chelsea for example and then was loaned to Atletico.

But Courtois wasnt already doing well in a top league

Well, he had many bigger clubs than after him and he was starting for Genk. Could have moved straight to Atletico or some similar level club. Hell, even Diouf had offers from other premier league clubs when he signed for us.

Anyways, I get your point, but this guy has only burst onto the scene just this season and for a 2 million euro release clause doesn't have all sorts of clubs jumping around yet. So potentially signing for us gives him a sureity and something to work towards + a higher profile and he can be loaned out anyways.

Will obv be his choice though, if we are interested.

I disagree. I'm sure lots of the Spanish clubs have their finger on the buzzer for him, just not too many English clubs hence we dont hear about him over here until now.

He's not too far off 1 goal for every 2 starts in la liga at 20 years old, of course he's causing a stir over there and he's the youngest player in the top 20 goalscorers in the league by a few years, next would be Vela at 23.

So other than Madrid and Barcelona (even they might be looking at him with such a low buyout) I'm sure the rest are keeping tabs. In fact I'd be very surprised if he wasnt one of the first names linked with Atletico to replace Falcao.

Both have been top class tonight. Amat is a bit rash in the tackle from what iVe seen of him previously though.
