Just watched the first half of MUFC V Benfica on the club website. I had seen some of it before, maybe highlights. But full match is here. Obviously some wiz of AI has cleaned up the footage. It’s most entertaining - and eye opening in a host of ways. How good Charlton was. How possession based was Benfica. How English hoof-ball worked in practice. How the ref seemed to favour United. How George Best was electrifying and also a bit infuriating.
Most striking was how many facets of the game haven’t changed at all much. It’s gas that keepers could handle passes back. How offside was a matter of using your eyes. But thd flow and energy of the game, the tackles - even the fouls - were not as far removed from today as I was expecting. Check it out; it’s a fun watch.
