Lee Cattermole can solve quite a few problems

Let us start by saying that I don't really like the guy - he resembles a mad man, and he is a loose cannon who will soon be the player with the most cards in the premier League.

But he has something that none of our players have - including Fletcher - a almost psychotic will to win the ball in midfield. It would be interesting to see how many tackles he won in the matches against the big teams this season.

He is not the best passer of the ball - but he isn't bad either. I would actually say he is better than I thought prior to this season. People talk about Henderson - I wouldnt mind having either - they could very well be England regulars both of them.

The only 'problem' he'd solve is the problem of who to bet on for 'first card'.

I agree we lack some bite in midfield, I completely and utterly disagree that Cattermole is the answer.

Unless we're following Liverpool's guide to mediocracy

I don't get this. He's just a shite anklebiter.

I'm not a person who judge players because they play for lesser clubs or that they're not the biggest name around, but seeing Lee Cattermole makes me fecking sick. He's frustrating to watch because he's such a limited footballer. He's a really good block in midfield though, but that's about it.

He completely tore our, Liverpool AND City's midfield to shreds. He is limited in many aspects yes - but in terms of winning the ball and adding aggression to the midfield - there arent many better

Not for us. Rated him since he was a demon for Boro against Arsenal a number of years back. But I dont think he's ready for a big club.

I stand by my words - Cattermole would solve MANY of our problems. People say they do not want him - maybe so - but Sunderlands midfield has bossed every single topside they have met this year. They ran over us - they ran over City and today they destroyed Chelsea at the Bridge.

He is turning into a superb player

he gets stuck in and isn't a ponce like some players. It's what we need

Just another over hyped English 'blood, thunder and guts' midfielder with no talent. I'd rather have michael brown.

He's no Roy Keane. He's also a twat.

Henderson is better. Fletcher is considerably better. Numerous of our youngsters will most likely become better. There are far more talented youngsters out there too.

The only reason to sign him would be to be if we wanted to be on the wrong end of the fair play league.

What's the point of buying him. He'll miss 10 games a season with suspension

Thing is he's just not quite good enough. He will always stand out in these games, closing down talented players who have the ball, but what about games when we're dominating possession. Fletcher does what he does and has talent going forward that Cattermole can only dream of, if Hargreaves comes back he is twice the player at doing a similar thing, again with a lot more talent going forwards.

He just isn't good enough for a top club, that's why Middlesbrough sold him, that's why Wigan sold him. If they really believed in a few years he would be top club potential would he have been sold? Not a chance.

While I think he's rubbish too that's not a valid point.

Yeah, who needs technique and creativity?

Not players like Makelele, Cambiasso, Keane or Gattuso who haven't had bad careers have they?

Technique and creativity is not the be all and end all for being a top footballer(which I'm not saying Cattermole is) and the sooner people realise that the better. You can't win with a team full of fancy dans and lightweight flair players, it just doesn't work and you need to get the balance right as Arsenal fans will attest to.

I cant believe that i've just seen Makelele, Cambiasso, Keane and Gattuso mentioned in the same thread as Cattermole

The first 4 were more than game breakers, they had intelligence too

He isnt turning into a superb player at all, he is a journeyman thug who is having a good little run. He lacks the ability to pass the ball and what good is winning the ball if you give it away all the time like he does.
He simply isnt United quality. He isnt as good as you are imagining.

:lol:

First of all: Like those above, I'm staggered that you mention Cattermole in the same breath as those.

Second: Like I've said numerous times, technique isn't just about flair or step-overs. That's a stupid, straw-man argument. Technique in football includes:

1. Striking the ball;

2. Heading the ball;

3. Dribbling with the ball;

4. Controlling the ball;

5. Tackling;

6. Goalkeeping (sorting feet, being aware of your position vis a vis the goal, kicking, controlling your area, etc).

For a central midfielder, I'm more concerned with 1 and 4. It's about touch in tight areas and finding the right pass. That's technique. Then there is, of course, seeing space and reading the game.

So, before launching into a straw-man argument, do your homework, mate. It'll save you some embarrassment.

Yeah, who needs technique and creativity?

don't worry, there's always carrick.....but we do need someone with bite. I'd like to see Tunnicliffe myself. Another example of someone at the club who can actually put himself about. People can say what they like but we need a tackler in the middle. You can have imagination and creation but we definately lack bite too

When people here suggest we buy players like Cattermole and Huddlestone, I wonder if they are in the their right mind or if they have gone mental.
