Nantes goalkeeper Mickael Landreau has said that he will leave the club, although his coach Angel Marcos has advised him to stay with his side and eventually 'succeed Fabien Barthez at Manchester United'. Nothing like taking something for granted is there.

Landreau reportedly turned down a move to Barcelona during the summer and, although he does not regret staying to skipper the side this season, he believes he is ready to move onto a bigger stage.

"I don't regret staying for this season, it's quite honourable to be fighting for Nantes the way we are even if it is less prestigious than fighting for a title," said Landreau.
"I'm mature and I feel that I don't need an intermediary stage before joining a big club.
"I have never been so close to leaving, I've got plenty of experience and I'm still progressing. I've got more and more consistent as I've shown in Le Championnat, the Champions' League and with France Under-21s. But Nantes aren't doing very well and that's not doing me much good."

Fabien has urged French coach Roger Lemerre to select Landreau for the World Cup squad after some stunning performances recently.

Nantes coach Marcos has however warned Landreau against signing for the first big club that comes along in the summer, and believes that he should bide his time and succeed Barthez as the number one at Old Trafford.
"If I were Mickael, I won't bother with signing for another club before leaving for Manchester," said Marcos.
"I would wait calmly in Nantes for one or two seasons, until Fabien Barthez will leave his place."

If he played like that every time I'd have him!

He would be a good adition if Raimond Van der Gow moved into a coaching role.

One great game does not make a great player.

Fabian has been good at United and there is no need to replace him. Roy Carroll will prove his worth also IMO.

Right now MU has three good keepers. Why should Sir Alex buy another one.I think he should buy a new defender not a goalkeeper.

He had a good game on Wednesday but personally I think that Roy Carroll should replace Barthez. Carroll is only twenty-three and has performed competently this season, with goalkeepers generally playing until an old age he has ten to fifteen years to become a world class goalkeeper. When the time comes Carroll will be able to succeed Barthez.

There will be a need to look for a successor to Fab in the long run and Landreau would not be too bad for the role...though there might be other better candidates such as Robinson. Caroll, is on who I do not see succeeding Barhtez..IMO his handling is not very good though his anticipation is okay and his positioning is good. Landreau is not as eccentric as Barthez which is a good thing.

He will never leave his club if he's not certain to be number one keeper. With Barthez here it's impossible. Just the 453th keeper linked with United this year, just another rumour. And I hope Fab will stay until the end of his contract.

Man Utd linked with Derby, Villa target Pletikosa

English football
23/2/02

Manchester United has been linked with Hajduk Split goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa.
With United reportedly monitoring Chievo Verona No1 Cristiano Lupatelli, who is also a target for AS Roma, the Italian media has named several other targets the English giants are considering.

Pletikosa is Croatia's No1 and almost joined Derby County before the Rams found his £3.5 million price tag too rich.

Aston Villa are also interested in the 23 year-old, who appears certain to be on his way from Hajduk Split in the summer.

With doubts remaining over the long-term status of Fabien Barthez at Old Trafford, it appears United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is set to sign a new international class goalkeeper at the end of the season.

What's sure is that if Landreau leaves Nantes (what he could have done for years yet), it is to be the number one. That's why he certainly won't go to Man Utd.
Some of you may think his performance against MU was exceptionnal, but he is really good at every match. And he has won many competitions with Nantes yet.
AS Roma and Barcelona seems to be interested by him. But he won't leave Nantes for Roma if Antonioli stays at AS Roma.

Maybe he will finally stay in his club. Like most of the good french keepers who are playing in France : Coupet, Ramé, Warmuz, Letizi. And remember that Barthez was in Monaco before last season transfer !

I remember when Arsenal played another French club, Lyon or something a few years ago and they had a keeper (Warmuz i think(?) ) and he was fecking brilliant, have'nt heard feckall about him since then

Was it this match between Arsenal and Lens, when Vairelles had been sent off for no reason ? Probably, because Warmuz is in Lens for 10 years or more. He is still very good and top of the french league with Lens. Lemerre said that if there was an "hécatombe" in french keepers, he would be a good choice.
I forgot Wimbée in my list. ;)

Yeah Lens then, I knew it began with 'l' but it was definatley Warmuz, I think in the treble season when Arsenal played European games at Wembley, he was brilliant

Barthez still has 5 or 6 years with us, so it's still too early to consider who is his successor yet.

I can see Arsenal going for him in the summer.

Aaah, the good old days of inventive usernames. No wr8's or ILuvsRonaldos...Neil Thomson. Now there's a username you can rely on.

Any particular reason?

He's French. Had a great game last night. Been good and consistent for years now (recently played his 500th Ligue 1 match). At 31, experienced but still young enough for a keeper.

Also, when I google his name now, it seems like there already has been previous interest. Speculation at least.
