Watched Wales-USA the other day and was very impressed with Donavon's ability to run at defenders and perpetually keep them guessing about his next move. Seems he's matured alot in the past 18 months or so. Would be an fantastic pickup for any European club.

IMO its been difficult to get a good sense of how good MLS players are unless they either completely dominate or else I get a chance to see them in internationals. I thought Donavon was another flash media starlet but his performances over the past year have obviously proven me wrong.

Donavon played well but he was up against

Wales: P Jones (Ward, 46), M Jones, Vaughan, Melville, Williams, Pembridge (Robinson, 79), Oster (Pipe, 70), Johnson, Davies, Koumas, Taylor.

I dont think that he would cope as well against defenders who play in the premiership... let alone the likes of Ayala, Nesta, Chivu in the champions league...

if he does come to Europe I doubt very much a top side would be prepared to take a gamble on him...

I am a huge Donavon fan, had a brilliant world cup and I think he would be a great buy, he already has a european club though, i think you will find he is owned by Leverkusen.

Nice to see him making a comback.

I still think Neighbours was his best work.

Donovan would be a great super sub in England but not sure he could handle 30+ games of 90 minutes in this league. I think he could be a star in Germany, Spain, France, Holland, etc. But the Italian and English leagues would manhandle him. Now, if he could gain 10 lbs...different story.

I want to see Johnson and Quaranta develop. I think they have the size to play in England.

Americans that could handle England's physical style...

O'Brien, Sanneh, Pope, Califf, Bocanegra, McBride, Mathis, Stewart, Mastreoni, and perhaps a few U23 players on the rise.

I thought Donovan tried out in Germany but didn't made the grade (was homesick) so was loaned back to the MLS?

No no no <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[No No]" />

Are we forgetting the shagging of Kylie ???

Now THAT is some feat !

When Donovan tried Germany, he was like 16 at first and departed by age 18. His coach did not give him a fair shot either, which has been well documented. After his WC performance, the Leverkusen coach had a change of heart. But Donovan chose to stay in the US for a team that gave him a chance and did not discriminate his American blood.

USA in 2010

GK- Howard (31)
LB- Bocanegra (31)
CB- Califf (30)
CB- Spector (25)
RB- Marshall (25)
LW- Beasley (28)
AM- Donovan (28)
DM- Mapp (25)
RW- Convey (27)
ST- Quaranta (25)
ST- Adu (21)

i'm an american and i'm still not sold on landon donovan making it at the highest level, especially considering that he plays in a shit league against bad defenders and will not improve

not united quality at all, if we wanted a younger american attacker we should go with beasley or convey

Did not impose himself on this match at all. To be fair he was forced to drop back and defend for most of the match as Wales were reduced to 10 men. Davis was constantly beaten by Eddie Lewis.

What? You mean they're not going to naturalise more foreigners, to try and make their team competitive?

good talent...

He won the Golden Ball at the U-17 World Championships and was signed around that time by Leverkusen. He spent a few years playing reserves, didn't like the lifestyle in Germany and thought he wasn't being given a fair shake.

He was loaned to San Jose for 2 years. LD was brilliant in 2001 and led San Jose to the championship. He was so-so last year, but none of the WC participants did very well.

He did not want to go back to BL and is now playing his 3rd season in San Jose.

He has good skills on the ball, great vision, and pace; but along with his size, his attitude might be a problem. He seems to want things his way and would rather be a star in MLS instead of improving his game more in Europe.

I think Ed Johnson and Convey are the real prizes. Johnson is a forward who's a few years younger, has all the tools but just hasn't quite made it in MLS.

Well, I believe the US did make the QFs with an all natural born US starting lineup...like it or not, the US is a highly competitive team and can defeat any other country on any given day...

I agree with lawmill, Convey is the one that will be the real prize.

I was at the US Vs Wales game and my opinion of LD's play is mixed. He seemed to be fast, and a good dribbler, but his shooting was terrible. He missed several easy one on ones. Maybe it was just that game, I don't know, but everyone in the stands kept saying "he gets to the goal, but doesn't score..." LD is good, but I think thats because we are comparing him with other MLS players. Hopefully he can prove me wrong someday. I like Beasley more, he needs to bulk up though, or he'll never make it outside the MLS.
