SIR ALEX FERGUSON has made a shock move to sign Brazilian World Cup winner Kleberson - and steal him from under the noses of Newcastle.

The Manchester United manager has been given £30million to strengthen his squad this summer and has made an offer in excess of £5m just days before he bids £7m for Leeds United star Harry Kewell.

The Kleberson deal has been agreed by Atletico Paranaense and his agent Marcel Figer says he has held talks with United officials about terms for the player. The

agreement comes four months after a move to Newcastle fell through, although manager Sir Bobby Robson is still interested in the 23-year-old defensive midfielder.

Brazilian club Atletico Paranaense are now anxious to sell as Kleberson's contract expires next February and he is refusing to sign a new deal.

He is desperate for a move to the Premiership and said: "It's a dream for me to play in England. I believe I'm ready for this challenge.

"Gilberto talks of how well contested the matches are in the Premier League. In Brazil the game is more based on individual skills. In England teams play quicker and with more tactical awareness."

Kleberson, 23, a key part of his country's World Cup winning squad, did not join Newcastle or Leeds early this year because he did not want to leave Brazil until he had married his teenage girlfriend who turned 16 on Valentine's Day.

Leeds had an exclusive first option to sign Kleberson last November before former chairman Peter Ridsdale pulled out at the last minute.

Newcastle were also keen but United boss Ferguson has stolen a march on his rivals.

United chairman Peter Kenyon has sent club officials to Brazil where they met Atletico Paranaense president Mario Celsor Petraglia and the deal looks certain to go through subject to personal terms and a medical. A work permit will not be a problem as he is a regular international.

United are also tracking two other Brazilian World Cup winners in Paris Saint Germain's Brazilian forward Ronaldinho and Bayer Leverkusen's centre-half Lucio.

Ferguson has been chasing Kewell for weeks and is poised to open the bidding officially for the Australian international when the transfer window opens on Sunday.

No quotes mentioning any teams there though.

Good point...also what's that bit at the end about Kewell preferring London/Arsenal?

I might be wrong but can´t Kleberson play right back as well as defesive mid.? Maybe it´s the fullback signing we heard so much about. ..

The women in Brazil mature at a much younger age :)

I don't think we need pedophiles at OT...

Not him. Too inconsistent. Has been absolute garbage in the all-mighty Brazilian league.

Fairly skillful but nothing to add at OT.

I actually hope he doesnt sign. I dont think hes the type of player we need at fullback to be honest. Im hoping we manage to get Thuram but Im not overly confident atm <img src="graemlins/nervous.gif" border="0" alt="[Nervous]" />
