WBA light-welterweight champion Amir Khan believes he may be the victim of racial tension in Britain and has claimed he would be a "superstar" if he was white. His father, however, does not agree.

The 22-year-old defends his belt for the first time against mandatory challenger Dmitriy Salita at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle.

He was booed by a small but vocal minority at the Prizefighter tournament at the ExCel Arena last week and the Muslim has put such behaviour down to bigotry.

"It's probably jealousy and sometimes skin colour does make a difference," he said. "I know if, maybe, I was a white English fighter, I would be a superstar in Britain.

"I never get racist remarks but it's always out there which you can't stop. You just live and learn about what people are like.

"I just choose to ignore them."

The Bolton fighter added: "I'm proud to be British and it's a very small minority but it does hurt you and it pushes you all the way.

"I went to the Olympic Games for Britain and won a medal for Britain and then won a world title for Britain but sometimes you don't see the appreciation."

However, Amir's father Shah has refuted such assertions and told BBC Radio Five Live: "I don't agree with it to tell you the truth. I don't know why he made that comment but I think the attention he gets now at this stage of his career is incredible. I think he is known all round not just in England but round the world."

He added: "I think he is almost there anyway. He has got a long way to go yet and he is still young, he is only 22.

"I think all the superstardom will come eventually. Considering his age and the level he is at now I think he is quite well known."

Shah still believes his son will be well supported tonight in the north-east and he continued: "I am sure everybody will be behind him and he's going to get a great response in Newcastle tonight.

"It's going to be a tough fight for him but preparation has gone really well and I don't think there is any reason why he shouldn't come out on top."

A possible clash with Ricky Hatton has been suggested but Shah believes the Mancunian ought to retire, saying: "If the fight was to come it's a possibility. I personally think Ricky should retire: he's a great guy, a great champion and achieved what every fighter wants to achieve. If Amir gets to that level and achieves what he has I think he'll have done great.han Feels

Looks to me like he's gearing up to a permanent move to the USA.

yeah because only white fighters become superstars in th uk...

oh except for people nasseem, eubank, benn, bruno etc...

perhaps hes not a superstar because he has not had that many big fights against people the public know...

put on a few lbs and start mixing it with the likes of hatton, de la hoya, mayweather and manny... knock those 4 off in a row and a guarantee he would be a superstar all over the world

He's get a lot of stick - I was watching his last fight on stream the amount of racist remarks shocked me. Then again the average boxing fan is a pleb.

Racism is the last excuse to hide your impotency...

He is a twat.In a full contact sport racist remarks can spur up super stars rather bringing them down and also he never got the stick as much as much as some west indian boxers that train in Atlanta...

You become a superstar when you earn it, ok he is a world champion and potentially a world class fighter (something I think Roach can make him) but in my book your not a superstar inside of 21 fights if you have fought relatively unknown fighters barring (Barrera) and have lost inside 1 minute against an unknown. Potentially a star but a long way to go, starting with Salita first.

The trouble with Khan is he thinks hes better than he really is, and until he proves it what does he expect? Racism and crtiscism is part of the game (racism shouldnt be ofcourse) but Britain loves to knock a winner until they become a loser than can knock them some more.

How does he think the likes of Junior Witter feel.

And a certain Lennox Lewis.

I'm never sure whether people understand the nature of boxing, especially when they call him a twat. Boxing is a sport where a certain amount of self belief boardering on arrogance is nessesary, to suggest that Amir is anymore arrogant than 90% of boxers isn't true.

Khan gets alot of racism, but I honestly don't remember Naseem getting as much stick until he lost to Barrerra that is.

I think many are pissed off with Amirs constant media-whoring and not facing decent fighters. Once he puts a string of great fights together and gets that prescott ordeal off his back and establishes himself he'll face alot less bigotry. Doesn't excuse racism but I believe his comments could be construed as arrogant and another example of him downplaying Britain and bigging up his move to the US.

I wonder if those chips on his shoulders aids his balance when he's sparring.

I don't like how much shit Amir Khan gets, especially considering he actually comes across as a nice guy in his interviews (bar the occasional dim comment).

His Olympics success made him a household name, so what if he made a load of money on the back of it - wouldn't most people? And while I'm not gonna deny that he's had the silver spoon treatment with regards to his pro career, you can't really hold him responsible can you? Have a go at Frank Warren instead, who deserves any flack that comes his way.

I think the race element definitely plays a part for some people. Look at Khan videos on Youtube and look at how vile some of the comments are - pure and unadulterated racism, I'm afraid. Still, I reckon a majority of the hate for Khan comes from the hype surrounding him, despite his limited achievements in pro game, while more accomplished boxers received absolutely none.

None of it's his fault, though, so the abuse he gets is uncalled for. The booing in particular is pathetic. If he steps up in class and starts fighting more dangerous opponents - and succeeds - then I think a lot of it will start to subside, mind.

He has a lot of potential and he's in perfect hands with Roach, so lets get behind him and see how far he can go (providing that chin holds up).
