When Sunderland go down, should we try and buy him?

He hasn't suddenly become a bad striker - he's just in a bad team.

He's English, won't cost a fortune, and is a proven goalscorer. With the service our midfield can offer, I think he'd be worth a gamble.

Phillips and Jansen would be superb acquisitions imo.

Glad there we have another supported in "buying English" Livvie ...

He's a good player Philips, ... but I think our up-coming #9 should - like many others agree - be one either having pacey/tricky skills or a good link-man in nature. I see Philips more of a natural finisher agree? but his ability on both the areas above should be considered just "normal" ... and he's not young anymore :( .. I have doubt on his physical part of game as well ...

How old is he anyway?

Shearer is 33 and not doing too badly. Cole and Yorke are both 31/32.

Not saying we shouldn't buy someone younger with more pace, but Phillips might be a bargain.

I'd rather strengthen by buying several cheaper good players than splash out a fortune on several big names.

I think Phillips could do the job. He works hard, but is suffering by being in a shit team. He can't have lost the knack of scoring.

We'll have him too.

And Matt Jansen.

Time to put things in perspective here. The names mentioned on here recently as additions to our squad include:

Phillips
Beattie
Defoe
Vassell
Smith
Christie
Fowler

And there's one thing common to the whole lot of them. They are all being kept out of a shite England team by none other than Emile Heskey.

Is this the best Manchester United can do?

And by the way, Phillips is as big a gooner as you will ever come across.

You forgot Matt Jansen.

He nearly made the World Cup but for his accident.

And all that lot are better than Heskey.

What about Nicolas Anelka?</strong><hr></blockquote>

Bit sulky. City wouldn't sell him to us anyway.

you have as much chance of Totti coming to us(or anywhere outside of Italy) than you have of Becks, Gary Neville and Scholesy going to Liverpool. And imho we already have our very own Totti in Scholes. I havent seen enough of Ronaldinho OR Cisse to form a decent opinion on them, although Ronaldinho did look pretty good against England in the World Cup. Ive only seen Cisse once in the World Cup, and once against Liverpool, and both times he was ineffective.

Sir Alex hit the nail on the head when he said it's hard choosing who to buy, because there are only a select few who will improve the standard of our squad, and Phillips doesnt fit in that category imo.

I agree totally. No ones doubting, he's a decent player but he wouldnt bring anything to our squad that we dont have.

Ive said it so many times im boring myself, but, we really need a huge injection of Pace, phillips doesnt really hold this.

My apology but just can't find a better place to put this ...
I am so hopeful of a pacey striker nxt season that I think if needed - I would even consider Saha as a possible solution. Ok well he ain't finish article and he could be "Henry" in disguise ( both played for French youth team ) .. but I think the current team just so much lack of that twist and turn ability - Saha could be able to provide some different dimensions while staying within the budget.

Of course - don't ever raise Totti or Cisse in the equation here .. Unless for you think 20=5 and $20mil is the SAME as $5mil. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

i agreee, as i have posted before, when i was working in bishop auckland 3mnts or so ago, he came into a shop i was working at, and was doing the sports crossword, and i asked him if he could help me, i said a premireship striker plays for sunderland, should be playing for man utd, with 2 ll`s in his name, he just laughed, and went on with his day!!! such a nice bloke, he should be givin a chance at a big club!!

He's not a bad striker and he might not cost the earth however, why get rid of a player like A Cole who has a lot more in his all round game, ie passing, runs and sometimes sublime finishes! I can't see it as being a step in the right direction for united. We need somebody to shake up the other forwards and create a little healthy competition for places.
Does anyone else agree that Forlan might not be of the calibre we expect to see at O.T? I think Alex needs to admitt that he's human like us all and a mistake has been made this time. I think a finished article is needed and a rough diamond with real potential. Sadly for me Phillips does fit the bill, Tottenham bound me thinks.

:sigh:

Andy Cole did not want to stay at Old Trafford and be part of a rotation system. Had he done so, he would probably still be here. He wanted to play in the World Cup and chose to move on in order to further that ambition.

Had he wanted to stay and play as and when, he would still be here. But he didn't. End of story.

I think that you miss the point Livvie. Its not that A Cole left to further his England career it's about United moving up to another level of excellance. Cole did his job but United have moved on and to think that Phillips may improve us is as stupid as saying A Cole was ever good enough for England.
Why do you think he got dropped to the bench as soon as we were able to get our hands on a world class striker/ finisher such as Ruud. And his child like spoilt attitude meant he was always going to end up at an also-ran club like Blackburn.Rather than stay and play his part when given the oppertunity or force the managers hand by putting in the performances. He's hardly set Blackburns world on fire has he? Forward not sideways thats all I'm saying.

Didndt he quit the International scene while he was at United?.</strong><hr></blockquote>

It was well documented that he wanted to go to Japan and thought his chance would be non-existent (which it was anyway) if he stayed at United and didn't play regularly.

Yorke quit International football whilst at United though.

I tend to agree with most of what you've said.

Except the bit where you call me stupid. ;)

Would you have said Phillips wasn't good enough a couple of years ago when he scored over 30 league goals? He's got the abilility - but I'm not saying he should be here as a first or even second choice, but to strengthen the squad.

I rate phillips, but hes not got anything we dont have.</strong><hr></blockquote>

True. I'd just like to see how he performs in a better team.

It would be interesting to see what hed do with a bit of service around him, and if sunderland let us (which im sure they wont) loan him next season when they go down, itd be intriguing.

But i wouldnt back buying him ahead of players like ronaldinho or cisse or someone that gives us that extra something.

I think he'll go to spurs, myself.
