Kenwyne Jones has been fined two weeks' wages by Stoke City after texting manager Mark Hughes to say he was unavailable to play against Liverpool.

The Trinidad and Tobago striker was hit with an £80,000 penalty after failing to report for Sunday's game.
Jones, who has six months left on his contract, contacted his manager on Saturday night to say he had no intention of turning up at the Britannia Stadium.

Stoke were unsure whether he would carry through his threat but it became evident that the 29-year-old would not be playing after he failed to attend the team's pre-match meal at the club's Clayton Wood training ground.

Hughes was understandably furious and his only comment to media who enquired after the 5-3 defeat to Liverpool was that Jones had been 'unavailable'.

The manager and chief executive Tony Scholes were called to a meeting with the player and his agent after training on Monday.

Stoke, who immediately censured the striker for breach of contract after he effectively withdrew his labour, believe that Jones may have another club waiting in the wings - Everton are among his admirers.

However, a suggestion that the player ought to be allowed to write off the remainder of his deal was laughed at by club officials.

Stoke would save themselves £1million in wages but Jones would then be free to sign for someone else during the transfer window without Stoke receiving a fee.

Hughes is baffled by the whole incident, particularly as Jones played in the FA Cup defeat of Leicester City the previous week and did well.

Jones has seen his place in the side taken by Peter Crouch, who has grasped the opportunity and given himself a new lease of life in the Potteries.

But there was no indication from the management before Sunday's game that Jones would not be playing.

Hughes has no intention of allowing the forward to leave while he remains in the hunt for additional firepower. Stoke are committed to bringing in one, if not two, strikers this month.
Hughes is not going to leave himself short of options by agreeing to sanction Jones' exit with the club still needing to safeguard their top flight status during the decisive second half of the season.

A few journos seem to be suggesting it's all about wanting to go to Everton. I don't understand Everton wanting him, tbh. He gives Adebayor a run for his money in the trying for three weeks a season stakes.

They just need some back-up if Lukaku gets injured, seeing as it looks as though Jelovic is leaving to get playing time before the world cup. It's not a step backwards, it's just squad filler.

Jones is half the player of Lukaku... and that's being kind.

Surely the point of these squad type players is that you roughly know what you'll get from them when they are required. With Jones it's much more likely to be no effort, no goals, no first touch. Then occasionally he'll throw in a brilliant performance and everyone wonders if that's the game he needed to kick on. Rinse and repeat.

The problem Everton have is they only every play one striker. So their options for what is effectively third choice striker (after Kone presumably) aren't going to be great. Good luck finding a striker who can guarantee goals in the prem who is willing to be third choice.

Arsenal have a similar predicament with their back-up striker options with the system they play and rarely deviate from.

Finally Everton seek to fill Anichebe's boots.

An actual money has been paid for Anichebe. 6 million too. I feel it needs to be reminded.

18 fecking goals in 131.

Motivation issues?

How the feck is jones on 40 grand a week!?!?!?! Perfect example of why football is doomed

This would be a very poor signing. Everton have played lovely football this season and I can't see, for the life of me, why they would want such a poor player. They really should have kept Jelevic who, despite not being very impressive, is a far better footballer.

He should be licking Sparky's testicles to get himself into that Stoke side let alone pretending like he's got a move to a better team lined up.

Footballers..

You would think unprofessional behaviour like this would off put future suitors, Why sign someone that won’t turn up next time he is unhappy and wants to move.

He's awful. I would have thought his next move would be to the Championship.

Seeing as Lukaku is unlikely to be there next season it seems a bit silly for them to get a squad filler there. Aside from that Kone has only played 5 games so far so instead of bringing someone else in they could just use him. The problem here is that both Kone and Jones are worse than Jelavic - in that sense it would be a step back because it's weakening their squad.

The reality of managing Everton. People have been quick to heap praise on Martinez, and he's obviously done a good job on the field, helped by a couple of quality loan signings, but his success or failure will be determined by the players he brings in.

McGeady & Jones wouldn't inspire much confidence really.

He's a decent signing, for Everton. The point is anyone expecting Martinez to have turned them into a top 4 side overnight is dreaming.

I don't think they have much chance of that right enough. He's still doing alright though, don't you think?

He's doing great, but as tend to happen some people get a bit carried away. A few weeks ago some were asking why he wasn't considered for the Utd job seeing as he's turned Everton around overnight.

They have some excellent loan signings and will do well this year, but Martinez will face the same challange as Moyes when it comes to replacing them. i.e. no money and having to look to players like McGeady and Jones.

It's January, not a lot of the players we will be after will be available and despite our great form this year we still need the numbers which McGeady has provided us. He wasn't expensive and I reckon he will be a good squad player at least.

I also doubt this interest in Jones is true but if it is then we will buy a younger striker in the summer to replace Lukaku anyway.

With Jelavic sold we now only have Lukaku as an out and out striker given that Kone is injured. Mirallas could play but if he ended up getting injured for the Chelsea game we would have to play youth. I wouldn't be surprised if we invested in two strikers if we have the money. One cheap player (a Jones type...not the best (in his case, shite which is why i hope not) but back up) and a striker who is 2nd in the pecking order or could start instead of Lukaku.
