Keane in line for shock United semi-final return
By Ian Ladyman

EXCLUSIVE: Roy Keane is on course to make a shock comeback in time for the second leg of Manchester United's Champions League semi- final in Germany in 11 days.

Injured: Keane at Deportivo
(LaurenceGriffiths/Allsport)
The Manchester United captain was expected to struggle to be fit for the Champions League Final on May 15 after tearing a hamstring against Deportivo La Coruna little more than a fortnight ago.

But Soccernet understands that Keane is making better progress than expected in his recovery, and is increasingly confident that he could be ready if needed in an emergency when United fly to Bayer Leverkusen a week on Monday.

With David Beckham definitely out with a broken foot and Juan Sebastian Veron continuing to battle against a nagging achilles problem, United are short of midfield options.

If Veron is fit, Keane will not be risked but the 30-year-old is hopeful that he will at least be in a position to give United manager Sir Alex Ferguson a last-ditch option if required.

Keane completed a full day's training for the first time since his injury yesterday, and has been aided in his recovery by a state-of-the-art oxygen tent which takes more oxygen to his damaged muscles.

Keane's extraordinary levels of fitness before his injury have also helped his rehabilitation, and the next few days will determine whether he will be available to fly to Germany.

I wouldn't rush Keane unless we do bad in the first leg. It would break his heart to miss another final :(

was it a full on torn hammy? if it was, i'm surprised he's training again so fast.

i'm glad mind

c'mon keano, lift the trophy man

Hopefully we can get through to the final without him. I'm pretty sure he's on 2 yellow cards. I don't even want to think about the possibility of him getting a 3rd yellow card in the 2nd semi-final leg and for him to miss the final again...

Keano is known to be a "good" healer. This is definitely good news but my guess is on the return leg to Bayerena, Keano will be on the bench. That's good news enough for me :)
If we make thru to finals then Keano will be fit to start!

Having said that, Butt has been a great replacement for him. Kudos to him!

thats great news!

Leave him out for the semis, unless we are in the shit going into the second leg! It's no good pushing him too early. Let him fully recover so we can use his full powers in the final!

I agree, at least that way he can't get another card or a recurrence of the hamstring.

Yeah I agree - He needs to be left out until the final - unless we are in dire straits going into the 2nd leg. I would cringe to see him booked, and it is something that is always a possibility in the nature of Roy Keane's game.

I think it would be wise to leave till the second leg otherwise it might scupper his chance to play in the final through a repeat injury. It's obvious that he will play out of skin (again!) and I would really hate for him to miss the final - it could be his last. :(
