KEANE NEEDS A SLAP - CLOUGHIE

Brian Clough believes Sir Alex Ferguson should consider knocking some sense into Roy Keane.

When manager at Nottingham Forest, Clough gave Keane a slap and sent him home from a tour of Jersey.

``It's got to the stage where Alex has to decide very quickly whether to remove the `arm around the shoulder' approach ... and wallop him,'' said Clough.

Keane is facing Football Association charges of bringing the game into disrepute following the publication of his autobiography and was sent off for the 11th time in his career against Sunderland last weekend.

Clough told the Sunday People: ``I only ever hit Roy the once. He got up, so I couldn't have hit him very hard.

``For Alex , the approach has to be `Hey, this has gone far enough, young man
- you've had enough skirmishes. You are 31 years old and should be fully mature, on and off the field.''

Clough believes Keane's problems are his own making, and that the Irishman may consider quitting the sport unless he changes his ways.

``They are self-inflicted pressures. If he continues along this particular path then he will think about retiring and just packing it all in.'

Agree! ...and remind him that he's only a football player. :p

A slap would only make his complexion worse than it already is! He should concentrate on drying out and possibly a larynx transplant instead.

No doubt he was a good manager - he groomed Keane for us and was unlucky not to manage England - but now he should stick to grooming his roses.

Shut up you fool! Have some respect! Clough is the best manager to never manage England! his psychology is something that even Alex could pay attention to! Cloughie got the best out of his players and didn't stand for prima donna's. I suggest Alex does the same and concentrate on restoring some kind of discipline in the dressing room!

Rather than concentrate on...?

Are you serious. Sir Alex would never manage England. Name one proud Scot, especially one who has already managed his country, who would even consider managing England.
I agree with Clough, Keane needs something to get his head straight and if it has to be drastic measures then so be it

kinda unrelated but I'm hearing that Keano got a 3 match suspension. silly Q time: can he serve that while out injured or does it take effect when he comes back to join the squad?

can serve it while injured, as long as there isnt a press lobbying of the govt to change the rules forf him ;)

He can serve the suspension, but if the FA ban him for the disrepute charge they have the option of postponing the ban until he is fully fit

IF you think about it, it is all part of the same point. Keane's discpline got him the ban, his book got him the disrepute charge, and both have lead Cloughie to say he needs a slap.

Found this at BBConline. When the critics come out of the woodwork, they really come out.

Former Manchester United and England captain
Bryan Robson warns Roy Keane may have to be relieved of the skipper's armband.
Robson, an influential leader in his time at Old Trafford, feels manager Sir Alex Ferguson may have to take the course of action if Keane continues to embroil himself in controversy.

The pair's career overlapped when Keane first joined Manchester United from Nottingham Forest and they have remained close.

Robson believes the Irishman remains a key figure in Ferguson's plans, but may need to be removed from the firing line after hitting the headlines for a variety of on and off-field reasons.

Robson said: "You can't keep having the captain involved in controversial situations.

"Manchester United are one of the biggest clubs in the world and if you are going to captain them you have to handle yourself immaculately on and off the pitch.

"If he is involved in too many more controversies, Sir Alex might look at the situation and think whether he should give the captaincy to David Beckham or Gary Neville, just to take the presure off a bit."

Like Bryan Robson, Roy Keane is an inspirational captain

Robson told MUTV that Keane's hip operation could have come at an opportune time.

He added: "It's no bad thing Roy is getting the chance to step back from the limelight becauseof his operation.

"He is an honest lad and an exceptional player but sometimes you can be too honest.

"A lot of things that have happened recently have been damaging to both him and Manchester United."

I agree but would the new captain motivate the players as much as Keano did. Keane will have to come back strong and he will but will he cope not being a captain.

I never said he would manage England just that he was the greatest manager never to

Don't decry a forest fan! claiming clough is the second Messiah is all he's got at the moment. let's not put the boot in too much - on people who dont usually deserve it.

Save our logic for those who think the 'balance of power' has changed

Just clarify who you are calling a forest fan?

The balance of power has changed but man management is still the biggest aspect of a managers job. Cloughie knows what he's talking about. Maybe a slap is a bit excessive but a damm got kick up the arse could do any more harm than has already been done.

i would suggest every Red to read Keano's book if they are going to discuss Keano and his football. Fairer to him.... Footballing talent aside, his mental strength and winning mentality are the key to his success! He set himself very high standard, when he's on the pitch, only one thing occupies him, that is WINNING, no complacency, take no bull sh**e, cant stand those players who just went through the motion!! The recent controversy is created by the ABU media, not that Keano has changed a bit when the book is out, so why the banish!?? Some (ABU and some non ABU alike!) are calling for his head, Why?? Because he is a United player and he is world class, it is all jealousy....... most reported were blown out of proportion. Revenge on football pitch is not a rarity, so many more nasty tackles happened. Keano is only penalized for being honest and come out with the clarity of those tackle. It is insane!!

Keano in his book has a lot of respect for Cloughie, Robbo.... great read!! And of course he admired King Eric (who only drinks Champagne by they way!)

Take away those elements from Keano, he's half the player he is now! And it also appears that SAF's appoach towards this player gain him a lot of respect (and bearing in mind Keano did not respect a lot of people!!!)
