Former world number one Justine Henin has announced her intention to return to competitive tennis in 2010, having retired just 16 months ago.

The 27-year-old Belgian, who won 41 singles titles, including seven Grand Slams, sparked rumours of a comeback when she began training again recently.

Henin retired on 14 May 2008, saying she had lost her passion for tennis.

Her return follows the fairytale comeback of compatriot Kim Clijsters, who won the US Open earlier this month.

Clijsters returned to the sport after two-and-a-half years away, during which time she gave birth to a daughter, Jada.

After barely a month back on the tour, the 26-year-old former world number one beat both Venus and Serena Williams on her way to success at Flushing Meadows.

Henin had played down speculation of a comeback in May, saying that the sport had left her with so many physical ailments a return was unthinkable.

But since the revelation that she was back in training, she had refused to speculate on a possible return to the WTA Tour.

Following her retirement, Henin, who was ranked number one in the world when she quit, had been working as a goodwill ambassador for Unicef and opened her own tennis academy.

She won the French Open four times, the US Open twice, the Australian Open once and an Olympic gold in 2004.

Henin's relatively small stature - she is only 5ft 5ins tall - and elegant one-handed backhand made her stand out among her rivals.

Her last competitive match was a three-set defeat by current world number one Dinara Safina at the German Open on 8 May, 2008.

After Kim Clijsters' heroics at the US Open, this was almost inevitable! The Belgian split at it again.

It'll be very interesting to see if she's still got it; she was brilliant in her prime. Maybe she can knock that useless bint Safina off the number one spot.

She will come to dominate again in the french atleast. But, she probably will regain the No.1 spot once again.

Great news!

Always liked watching Henin play and if she can return with more of the same she'll embarrass most of the women out there right now.

No doubt she looked at the current state of the WTA and realised she could win a lot more if she came back. Clijsters' win probably helped make her mind up.

Always loved her matches vs Serena too. Doubt she'll be happy she's back!

One of her main regrets was never winning Wimbledon. That will probably be her number one goal when playing again.

Too bad she quit just weeks before Wimbledon and the Olympics. Would have liked to see her finish that season at least. But I guess when the motivation is gone, there's no point really...

She's twice the player Clijsters is, so she'll do well.

That said, when the Williams sisters are interested they'll give her a game, but the rest are so mediocre it's not even funny.

Women tennis is in absolute dire state.

Really?

I think the fact there's such parity makes it so entertaining to watch... the US Open was perfect proof that your seed and everything means shit all at the end of the day.

I've never been so fixed into a female tennis draw like I was the US Open.

parity is not necessarily a good thing. All the women players are equally shit.

It's like the Conference in football, most of the teams are equally shit which is why not many people watch it.

I dunno I can't agree mate but eye of the beholder.

Quality of tennis is dire right now. Compare it to the time when Williams sisters were breaking through and likes of Henin and Davenport were at their pomp. Some one like Clijsters should never have been able to win a GS just like that

Compared to the men's game naturally. The difference in quality is staggering.

Not much different though in sports where womens competition is valued as highly as mens in terms of success, reward, and viewership.

I think that's what makes it more entertaining.

It's for sure opposite ends of the spectrum between me and you two

Jankovic has a face as if someone's beaten her with a frying pan. Unlike her gorgeous fellow Serb, who, depressingly, keeps losing in the first round of everything.

It's the same story with basically every female tennis player that has ever retired young.

Could see it a mile off.

Is it though? Mens final tickets at Wimbledon always sell for much more than women's final tickets. I'm sure more people watch men's tennis as well.

i dont really like either serb. Give me the Dulko or Kirilenko.

Serb birds are fit, but those two dont do it for me really, neither does that Sharipova, bint.
