Gunners swoop for Costa Rican
Arsenal are to sign highly-rated Costa Rica forward Joel Campbell for a fee of just under £1million, according to the youngster's club.

Campbell: Forging big reputation

Campbell has made just three senior appearances for Deporivo Saprissa, one of Costa Rica's top clubs, but has already caught the eye of many European scouts.

The 19-year-old scored his first international goal in a 5-0 victory over Cuba at the Gold Cup and followed that up with an assist in a 2-0 victory over Bolivia at the Copa America.

Campbell was unable to prevent Costa Rica from slipping out of that tournament at the group stage, but he left Argentina with many new admirers.

Arsenal have moved quickly to see off the competition for his signature and have a $1.5million (£930,000) deal in place.

Juan Carlos Rojas, president of Deporivo, confirmed the agreement to DNA Radio and said the transfer would be 'very beneficial to both Campbell and Costa Rican football'.

The youngster is set to take part in the U20 World Cup later this month, giving him another opportunity to impress.

It is expected that Arsenal will then send him out on loan as he has not played in 75 per cent of Costa Rica's games and will not be eligible for a work permit.

He is, however, considered to be an exciting prospect for the future and Arsenal have seen off interest from Italy and Spain in securing his services.

I thought he looked pretty impressive in the Copa America and is pretty cheap at less than a million.

PS: Tried search but couldn't find anything on him.

The deal isn't confirmed as yet. According to the player's father, they recieved an offer from an English club which was much better than Arsenal's and they're deciding on it.

Noticed him as well. Stand out performance.

Wonder what the other club is who is bidding more. Can't be a smaller PL team as they wouldn't have the funds/time to then loan him out as he doesn't qualify for a visa at this time.

Say what you will, but as a youth, unless it's United, Arsenal is the best place to go and develop. Chelsea/City = suicide.

Apparently we're in for him, along with Dynamo Kiev (and of course Arsenal).
Attack..attack..attack :D

I thought Diouf was sold or in the process of being sold. Other than that I don't have any complaints about your line up above

Come on mate... Let's be realistic... Put Park on, we need a solid runner.

Deal is off, apparently.

09.42: Interesting. You know that Joel Campbell kid that Arsenal were apparently signing? Well, they're not signing him anymore, it says here.

Apparently Campbell didn't show up for a pre-medical meeting with the Gooners, who were suitably unimpressed and pulled out of the deal.

President of Campbell's club Saprissa, Juan Carlos Rojas said:

"It's a disappointment for football, for Saprissa and for me that they have decided not to take up an offer from as serious and first-class people as Arsenal. I hope it works out for Joel.

"I assume his father thinks that things will get better and that's why he made this decision, but hey, there's always a risk. It's a shame that Costa Rican football could not have a player at Arsenal at this time."

It's been confirmed he has opted out of a move to Arsenal. We might have snatched him from under their noses here!

The knowledgeable Fourth_official on Twitter says his father has confirmed we were or are in for him.

Only if they give us a centre-back, too, we're light in that department as well.

If we sign him at all, he'd probably be parked at Twente for a couple years until he qualifies for a work permit.

Worth noting that he's only played three games for his club side in his career thus far without scoring a goal.

Please not another one

The money we spent on Bebe, Diouf and Manucho could have significantly gone to part of the budget of buying Wesley Sneijder :D

I prefer to see us sign a midfielder then another striker. We've got 7 strikers
(Rooney, Hernandez, Berbatov, Owen, Macheda, Welbeck, Diouf) and Young/Park/Giggs can play in the hole

Diouf is off to Blackpool, Macheda could be off on loan again and no guarantee that Berbatov is staying with PSG and Juve sniffing around
there is no room for another forward, we still have owen, rooney, hernandez and welbeck and unless we get suitable bid for berbatov, he stay as well

We're defo not going to get nasri this year if these reportsnare true...arsenal must be getting well peed off with us!!! Lol

Very impressive yesterday. Could be a surprise feature for Arsenal next season or back out on loan?

He looks ready for a shot in the Premier League based on the little I've seen him. Tidy player.

Did we play against him this year? He really impressed in a match or two but cant remember when

I'm still not completely sold on Campbell. We are craving a big time striker to come in so it slightly worries me that he may bring out the old classic "it's like a brand new signing" comment when Campbell comes back. He's a good talent but just him alone wouldn't suffice.

Given Sanogo's raw potential and Campbell's flair and finishing ability, I believe Wenger might not actually go for a big-name striker. He's given Sanogo so much match time last season, and Campbell's impressed in Olympiakos and in the World Cup. After selling Bendtner, I think Wenger might not go for another striker. He should still go for a new central defender to add depth and a midfielder who's solid defensively as those two are bigger priorities than a striker up front.

Sonogoal would make Gary Neville look potent in front of goal.

He's very raw, even more raw than Bebe was, IMO. I don't even think he can become a prolific goalscorer at a club like Arsenal, but he was prolific at Auxerre and was one of France's best players at the U-20 World Cup that France won. Wenger probably sees something in him if he's giving him this many chances.

Has he made an appearance for Arsenal yet.

No. Work permit issues meant that he couldn't join Arsenal immediately and had to go on loan twice before getting his work permit in July 2013. He's now eligible to play for Arsenal, and I think that, after his impressive loan spell and World Cup (so far), Wenger may give him a shot, or he may treat him like he treated Vela.

Why has he not stayed in one place for loans? He was doing well in Spain I thought and then boom he was gone to Greece - seems like an odd way to bring along one of your players

Sanogo has brilliant physical presence but is all bambi on ice whenever he needs to do anything with the ball. Campbell isn't nearly ready to lead our line. We need top quality up front.

I don't deny this. Giroud can't do everything by himself and easily burns out during the season. I honestly see Joel Campbell as a wide forward more so than as a striker (similar to how I viewed Vela at Arsenal). However, knowing Wenger, I doubt he'd spend big on a striker, and I feel like he sees Campbell as more of a striker than a wide forward (like Vela back then).

I expect Wenger to keep Sanogo for another year and refine him even more just because he's so poor technically but is a physical beast and a capable goalscorer (from his Auxerre spell and U-20 World Cup campaign). Plus, Wenger desperately needs a defensive midfielder, a backup goalkeeper, and another central defender.
