He got jobbed by the Yankees front office, namely Hank and Hal. George has obviously lost his grip on the team.

Sad day for the Yankees. Piss poor way to treat a man of great integrity and honour.

Good on ya Joe for not taking that insulting contract offer.

arseholes...

The contract offer was reasonable.

It was an outright insult.

A $2mil pay cut with "incentives?"

Do Hank and Hall really think Joe Torre needs incentives to want to take that team to a World Series victory?

I respect Joe Torre even more now than I did before. They offered a deal they knew he wouldn't accept and to his credit he gracefully and politely said thanks but no thanks, shook hands and walked out the door.

1 million if he reaches the play-offs which is the absolute minimum for the Yankees. Another million for reaching the AL championship and another 1 million if wwe went to the world series. Even with his base salary he is the highest paid manager in baseball. Is he that worried about not making the play-offs that a performance based contract becomes an insult?

It wasnt about the money for the Yanks, they are the MLB version of Chelsea, it was the fact that they couldnt fire Torre. Torre is one of the best managers I have seen in my life could anyone come and do what he did there, probably not. they did this just so he would reject it, and quit, it was always a formality, this has been in the news for weeks.

The big thing is whether AROD opts out of his contract which will void 21 mil of salary from the Rangers to the Yankees, as a result the Yankees say its over if he opts out. Interesting to see what happens although I believe he will stay, bring the Home Run record back to where it belongs the NYC

Okay, tell me who will do a better job than Torre to take the team to victory.

It wasn't Torre's fault the Yankees came up short in the first round this year and last, it's the players on the field. Do you think it's Torre's fault that Alex Rodriguez all but disappears in the postseason? That Derek Jeter was abysmal at the plate this time around? That Jorge Posada didn't hit jack or that Chien Ming Wang was a postseason bust? Torre can't do the job for his guys on the field. They let him down.

Joe Torre doesn't need incentives to get that team victories. He needs players that step up and prove they're worth the exorbitant salaries they're paid.

Hank and Hal have succeeded in taking this team further away from a WS Championship. They wanted Torre gone and they got their wish.

They may be sorry that they did.

Yes it was but Joe should have picked up the gauntlet so to speak. go to the play-offs and he gets 6 million, go to the series and he gets 8 million this year and 8 million guaranteed next year as well.

Hopefully we keep MVP. The guy is phenomenal.

You missed my point. Does Torre believe he has a team capable of winning the series? If yes then he should have taken the offer, if not then somebody else will step up.

It would have been a pimp move, but remember Torre is an old man, it would be like telling SAF youre fired unless you win the Treble, but if you do you will get 20 mil pounds. Torre is great man, but let us not forget an old man, who doesnt have the best health in the family and also has also already beaten prostate cancer. So all I can say to go is have a happy retirement, I had a great time seeing him bring my favorite baseball team back to life, and making them matter. Many other managers wuld have crumbled under the pressure but Joe took it like a man.

No, you've missed my point that I made to begin this thread, that the contract offer is an insult.

Of course he's got the horses to run the race, they need to perform. He has nothing to prove to Yankees ownership.

If Sir Alex had a few years of relative 'failure' like Torre did (I use the word failure lightly.) then the pressure on him would be huge. Cast your mind back to last summer when all the doom mongers were on this forum forecasting the end of United,Fergie,Giggs etc.

Agreed with the part I bolded. The man is a Yankee legend and a true great. Shame that it ended this way.

Yes he does. He needs to prove that he can still deliver a World series to NY. The contract offer was a challenge and Joe backed down from it, simple as.

Rodriguez' BA the last three postseasons:

2005: .133
2006: .071
2007: .267

including 1RBI over three years coming off a meaningless homer this year.

He plays small when it really counts.

meaningless only because we went on to lose the game.

meaningless only because we went on to lose the game.

lmao

You have selective reading skills in ignoring Rodriguez' repeated failure to ignite his team in the playoffs, to earn that mofo huge salary he receives.

All the while Joe Torre is held accountable for the failures of the players.

A travesty.

In that case why are managers responsible for anything?? They live and die on results and Joe couldn't the job done in the past few years.

Who will do a better job then at motivating the players, if motivation is necessary for so-called professionals that make obscene amounts of money to perform at the highest level?

If Don Mattingly is offered and takes the job I hope he's up to the circus that is Yankees ownership and the NY media.

I agree that A-Rod has been a disappointment in the postseason however that doesn't change the fact that to dismiss his home-run as meaningless is the product of hindsight. I was watching the game and hoping it would spark a Yankee's comeback.

So what exactly does Joe Torre do to earn 7 million a year? He doesn't bat, field, run bases, pitch, or motivate his players. He's in the results business and when you don't get results your job is on the line especially when you are part of an organisation as big as the Yankees.

The Yankees are not an MLB version of Chelsea.

I like Torre but Showalter put the nucleus of those championships in place from 1993-1995 and for too long Torre has got all the praise. Torre has failed the last 7 post-seasons, although losing to Arizona in 2001 was a fluke, the other post-season collapses highlight he's not getting it done. The contract offer was not bad at all. But I don't blame him for wanting more security and not be a lame duck (again). I would not rate Torre ahead of LaRussa and Piniella as managers. He's not a great "game manager" like those guys.

Is the most asinine statement anyone can make about a baseball player. All runs count in any game. That's like saying a Ronaldo goal up/down by 2 goals is "meaningless."

Pardon me for offending your delicate sensibilites. :D I rescind my statement that his home run was meaningless. It was not meaningless.

How about if I put it this way: A-Rod has thus far not been able to contribute in the biggest games for the Yankees in the timeliest manner, for example, when runners are actually on base.

More like the Real Madrid.

Well, Real Madrid are without question the most repugnant club in world football
bank rolled as they are by the Spanish Govt going all the way back to their most famous fan - Franco. So yeah, the Evil Empire are pretty similar i guess.

Go away Espanyol.

Steinbrenner and the GM were the ones putting the teams together, not Showalter or Torre, and it was obviously Torre is a better manager, he was awful in texas, AZ won the year after he left and so did NY. Torre was a manager and a great one at that but once the Yankees lost their core in the early 2000s he was always gonna have trouble getting all the new players to gel, but still got the Yanks to the playoffs every season

Report: Torre to Dodgers

Westchester, NY (Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly ready to fire manager Grady Little and replace him with former New York Yankees manager Joe Torre.

The Journal-News of Westchester, New York, citing two sources close to the situation, said the 67-year-old Torre could be named the Dodgers new manager on Tuesday.

Don Mattingly, who was one of the three finalists for the vacant Yankees job, is expected to join Torre in Los Angeles as his bench coach.

The Dodgers were 82-80 this season under Little and finished fourth in the NL West. Little, who called 2007 the toughest year of his career because of bickering between the team's veteran and young players, is under contract for the 2008 season.

Torre balked at a one-year incentive-laden offer to remain as manager of the Yankees after 12 seasons in the Bronx. The Yankees made the postseason in all 12 years of Torre's tenure and won four World Series championships.

But, the team has lost in the first round of the playoffs in three consecutive seasons and Torre is just 4-13 in his last 17 postseason games.

Torre has 2,067 career victories for sole possession of eighth place on baseball's all-time managerial wins list and ranks second on the Yankees all- time victories list. He's also managed the Mets (1977-81), Braves (1982-84) and Cardinals (1990-95) during his career.
