Manchester United have taken highly-rated Benfica starlets Joao Filipe and Joao Virginia on trial, Sky Sports understands.

Sky Sports revealed earlier this month that a host of Premier League clubs, including United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea were all chasing Filipe and Virginia.

Winger Filipe, who has been labelled the "the next Cristiano Ronaldo", and goalkeeper Virginia are regarded as two of the best young talents to emerge in Portugal in recent years.

Barcelona have already seen one offer rejected for Felipe with Benfica desperately trying to tie down the two teenagers to long-term deals to secure their futures.

However, United appear to have stolen a march on their rivals by coming to an agreement with Benfica to take Filipe and Virginia on trial so that they can cast an eye over the pair at close quarters.

If the duo impress during their stint at Carrington they could be offered deals to move to Old Trafford on a permanent basis.

Why with an offer on the table from Barca, do they need to audition for us?

Because let them know more about our academy and us knowing more about them will do more good than harm?Unlikely for any club to sign a 14-15 years old player without any trial unless he's Messi MKII.

They're 16 aren't they?

From the article the gist i got is they're letting us have a look, doesn't mean we're getting them. They may well reject our offer like they did to Barca.

It's still a good thing that they're coming for trial. We will have a closer look at them to see if they're real deal and they might be convinced by the development plan/facilities we have.

I believe (if rule in Portugal is similar to other countries) that Benfica has no way to stop them if they want to sign for us as they still haven't reached the age to sign scholarship/pro contract. They'll be signed for peanuts like Pogba,Macheda,... did.

I've actually heard of Filipe before (through a mate who's a big Benfica fan). Supposed to be a hugely talented player. Sign them up, Louie

No idea who they are. Surprised about this news since Benfica hasn´t produced a decent youth rank player since Rui Costa. But they have been investing alot in their academy lately, perhaps they are turning it around. Perhaps it´s better for them to move, since Benfica mostly plays serbs, argentinians and brazilians.

The names are João. I should know. It's my name.
