One of the better characters in football, but was an overrated player in his time in the PL. Still, never nice to see someone forced into retirement.

Anyone that goes on about what a great character he was needs a good banning.

He was an annoying twat.

Seconded.

It was refreshing to see a footballer with just a hint of personality, for about two minutes anyway.

Get the feck would ya sharky, the man was hilarious, leap frogging team mates after a goal was scored, took the piss out of his manager after scoring and also had one of the most comic moments in the league when he encountered Duncan Ferguson.

Seems like a great lad to have in the dressing room even if his talents werent all that. Very likeable chap.

Shame to see him retire.

Agreed

I thought he was great entertainment. He has had some funny moments. I always laugh at the Duncan Ferguson red card and the look on his face that he could not quite believe what had happened

No gifs in the football forum, lads.

When I saw you were posting a gif, first thing that came to mind was when there was some sort of pile on and he just threw himself over everyone.

Love how all of the players are laughing about the phil brown joke apart from mcshane, who still looks like he's being admonished. Probably so used to it seeing as he's fecking terrible, how he is still a premier league player is one of the mysteries of our age

Sad news.

Average player, entertaining character though

Ps the average footballer like Bullard, retiring at 33, do you guys think he'd have accumulated enough cash to last a lifetime? (Assuming he didn't piss it away on gambling/drinking etc).

Maybe living very frugally, but it would be hard to do so having been earning that much. Would have enough to set himself up in some kind of football-hanger-on business or property or something, and live nicely off that.

Shame injury forced him to retire.

On his character though, he was one but I never found him too funny. He tried to be funny and I just see straight past people like that.

The best way for footballers (in Africa at least) to use their wages and set themselves up and their families for a long time after their retirement, is to invest in real estate. Buy properties and rent them etc etc ...

Yeah, makes sense. I was just thinking, with someone like Gaz taking a punditry job etc - but surely that has more to do with boredom/wanting to be involved in football, then the need of money. Gaz is one of the luckier footballers, who should be fairly set in life (silly decisions aside).

Yeah, even Fowler did it. Now he's one of the more comfortable retired pros! No matter how much the property market falls by, if you own 40-50 properties you'd be comfortable, regardless.

Investing in different countries can also, pro footballers who pay in the top European leagues have a chance to earn so much. It is stupid when you hear some stories about struggling retired footballers.

Yeah agreed about the latter part especially but it's difficult. Most of them are young, naive, possible not very educated - coming into those sorts of cash at that age, surrounded by all the parasites (agents. 3rd party owners) and friends...fast cars, women, parties etc.

It's understandable to a point.

Well I'd include punditry in the "football-hanger-on business" - it's a way of effectively pronlonging his career in football. In Gaz's case, though, he could probably live pretty nicely on his earnings as a player, as long as he wasn't stupid. Must have earnt a whole lot more than Bullard.

It is, I think about what I would do with that much because tbh it's easier for me to do that but impossible to know how I'd really react. It is a unique opportunity to set yourself and your loved ones for life.

I don't think you will find many of his Hull City team mates agreeing, and Hull City fans wont say much good about him. ( as I sit here in an office just 500 metres from the Hull City stadium )

Of course the hull fans will not have much good to say, he's been using the club for 5mil. The players I don't know, I've not heard anything from them in relation to him. Either way though I still think he's fecking gas craic.
