Saw on Twitter it is 48 years old today and for me it is one of the greatest films ever made and started the Summer blockbuster of movies. Great performances from Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss which the latter two did not get along one bit which added to the ‘chemistry’ between them. Iconic music and multiple brilliant scenes and even though I never thought of it as a horror film (which some do) I love the tension in some of the scenes.

Just about to settle down with a glass of red and enjoy it once again.

Anybody here not really like it?

Great movie but feck me, I saw this when it came out, I'm definitely old!

Jaws is the only movie I know that is liked and respected by everyone. The most acclaimed directors have it as one of their favourite movies and I personally have never seen anyone say they didn’t like it.

Favourite movies always ebb and flow but this would never leave my top 5. Hearing its that old though? Jfc..

Jaws is my favourite movie of all time. It's perfect and in particular the second half is just incredible.

Love Jaws and one of the few instances where the film is better than the book.
Also, Dreyfuss has turned out to be abit of a tw*t.

Such a great film, one of the all times especially for that ^^^

Jaws might be the most influential movie ever on society when it came out. I remember that summer when it came out and on the beaches in Long Island nobody went in the water and mean no one. I wouldn’t go in my pool for weeks.

People go on about how sharks don't want to eat you, have you seen sharks? Just a playful bite is taking you apart. I saw a video the other week, some poor dude got eaten by a Tiger Shark. Sharks don't play.

People say you're more likely to get hit by lightning. I've got news for you: we're not swimming with the feckers 24/7 and if we were, the statistics would be very much higher.

Spielberg at his sicko best. The fact the film can be viewed as both a white suburban reactionary classic and a anti imperialist action film loved by likes of Fidel Castro is what makes Spielberg such a great and evil director.

In fairness, I don't spend much of my time roaming about in the middle of lightning storms either.

I reckon idiots driving cars is statistically the biggest threat to most of us of tallied against a ratio of how long we spend on or next to a road. Sharks don't even know how to drive

Never copped onto this. There was something similar with oranges in The Godfather...though I've read that wasn't intentional?

One of the classics where the stories behind it (minus the Shaw Dreyfuss spat which sounds brilliant) do nothing to add to the mystique. Big mechanical shark that didn't work and that's why you don't see it in the movie for 80 minutes? Ok. I could've done without that extra information.

But it's like saying you're more likely to get hit by lightning than eaten by a black hole... well those statistics are skewed because you don't spend your time whizzing about space in a spaceship - if you did it'd be much higher. Lightning is an occupational hazard day to day so it's different.

Yeah you're probably right about cars although you say sharks can't drive, I say show me the evidence.

The shark is fake

It's about a giant shark mate.

Interesting, it was a popular cinematic device at that time. Coppola used oranges in the Godfather to the same effect.

I haven't watched it. Given how popular and rated it is, I think I'll give it a go.

Sharks are apex predators. They will possibly attempt to eat whatever they come across. They may not like what they find with us, too bony and not fatty enough, but due to their size and strength a catastrophic result is likely.

Just saw this a couple of months ago with the missus. (She was watching it for the first time).
And it was such a thrill ride even now.
48 years old and still worth a watch!

You really should watch it as it is a wonderful movie. Yes it's about a shark but there are so many layers to it and some incredible character acting with iconic scenes. You will love it much more than you think you will.
