By looking at the list of players already there - some of whom are ultimate legends, but some are not in Jaap's league, or achieved so much for us.

I mean, if Jesper Olsen is there, Jaap should be.

It's a term used way too much for my liking.

TBH:

The class of 58
Law
Best
Charlton
Stiles
Cantona
Robson
Hughes
Schmeichel

+ (for the future):

Giggs
Beckham
Keane

are all that come to my mind as true (and future true) legends.

I agree that the word legend is misused.

But that's not the point of the topic really.

There is Current Team, and there is Legends, nothing in between.

Jaap doesn't figure, and that doesn't seem right. Like I said - is Jesper Olsen a legend?? But he's there, and Stam isn't.

Don't seem right to me.

Surely a legend needs to have either played for many years (Robson for instance) or made a huge difference to our team during a succesful period (ie Cantona)? Personally I wouldn't class Jaap as a legend.

Denis should be in there before Stam...but whoever's on there now are just legends in Niall's (or whoever did it up's) opinion. Everyone will have their own legends...like yaps and Maysie, etc.

Teddy should be in there. Or Cole & Yorke as a duo...

I agree with you too.

Jesper came to us at a time when non-Brits were an unacceptable rarity in English football. It was he who made non-Brits acceptable. He did the hard work.

Stam came here when non-Brits no longer had a problem. But he f*cked up anyway.

For me, Jesper is about thirteen miles ahead of Stam and the gap is widening.

Denis Law is about 1300000 miles ahead of both of them.

Well I'll put it another way then.

(And I agree about Cole and Yorke).

It's time Niall updated the site to include some ex-players. :D

Non-Brits may have been rare but they certainly were not unacceptable. Thyssen, Ardiles, Villa, Muhren et al all gave a lot to our game. Olsen was never the player he could have been. I watched him at Ajax before he joined us and he was really something special there. At OT he was average at best.

he was great in his first season.. but got sussed out, later on.

btw.. loved the way he took pens.

I agree with everyone who says the word legend is over-used.
Stam didn't stick around for long enough to fall into the legend category.

One player who, for his sheer loyality, should be classed in the future legends category is Ole. How many players would have been content to stay at a club where everytime a striker has arrived they have been higher up the pecking order than Ole. He's outstayed the lot of them. And not to mention his goals.

I agree again! :)

Not for the European Cup Final goal though, as Kidd scored one of those. Just for the reasons Ever hopefull mentioned and his record.

I've never seen anyone hit them any softer and still go in!

And don't forget his assists & general contribution! ;)

Unfortunately, he's still playing for United so he can't be on that list yet, unless Livvie gets her 'wish' & he's transferred out come January! :D

Dead right.

Anyway people - this isn't about whether Jaap is or isn't a legend. As I keep saying.

It's about Jaap - and also Cole and Yorke now - not being in either list.

We need a list for ex-players! Then the legends one can be more exclusive.

Oh, Livvie, I forgot to say that I agree that if Stam isn't there, then Jesper shudn't as well.

FYI, I loved that little guy - full of skills & bags of tricks - a real joy to watch - but he didn't do anything outstanding or win anything to be considered above Jaap! ;)

We should have a vote.

Just very instrumental in us winning the treble.

He was the our best defender during our best years ever. Undoubtedly world class and one of a handful of the world's best. But certainly not a United legend.

He was great. We only saw his true value when he left and our defence, and season, fell apart at the seams

He was a fecking legend, best premiership defender in our Treble year, one of the best I've ever seen and at his best better than Rio though Rio is young and now maturing into a world class player. Certainly comparable with the others on the Legends list, but I just need to know when was his first international match? And anyone got any interesting facts about him to put in his profile?

What about the great unsung hero. Dennis Irwin, for 10 years he was as good as any Full Back around. He never let the club down, he was mister reliable. Outstanding talent like Giggs, Best, Becks, Cantona etc is great but without players like Dennis any team would struggle.

In my view Dennis Irwin deserves to be in any Manchester Utd XI.

Damn right that Denis deserves to be in. As far as Jaap is concerned, I remember a quote from a writer in the Express who said that "...without Stam, Sir Alex would still be plain old Alex." I think that sums up his contribution. I agree he is the best centre-half we have had in a long long time. Those who say he fecked it up, well I'd just like to draw your attention to a certain Mr G. Best.
