Jaap Stam and a number of other Serie A stars will face their hearings on Friday after testing positive for banned steriod Nandroline.

The Dutchman's positive test came after Lazio's October 13 fixture with Atalanta, and he has since vociferously denied knowingly taking a banned substance.

Stam has been suspended pending the outcome of the hearing, as has Brescia's Spanish midfielder Josep Guardiola, whose hearing is likely to be early next week.

Yes Raoul I was thinking this a minute or so ago.

It is a well known fact that the officials in Spain or Italy are much stricter than in England, but I am not sure as to why.

One can only assume this is because players who have been found guilty to have taken drugs are rarely found in England in the past (i.e. Diego Maradona), but you feel the post-match samples will get more and more frequent.

It is wierd that Stam was not found to have taken steriods in England but almost immediately he is positive in Italy - which suggests he had been taking Nandroline in England.

It is a complicated subject but the fact more and more professionals (Guardiola, De Boer, Davids, Stam etc.) are being found positive makes me believe that Nandroline is getting in to their systems inadvertantly - meaning it finds its way in to food, <img src="graemlins/nervous.gif" border="0" alt="[Nervous]" /> becuase I doubt these players would ever take drugs in their life.

Stam facing 10-month ban threat

Italy's anti-doping officials have recommended that Jaap Stam should be suspended from football for 10 months.
The Lazio defender tested positive for nandrolone on October 13 and a follow-up counter-analysis test gave a similar result.

Stam, who joined the Rome club from Manchester United for £16.5million in August, met with anti-doping chiefs.

Should the FIGC (Italy's football association) concur with the guidance, Stam would miss the remainder of the Italian season.
