Guardian said:
Another football icon has been honoured by a statue with a bronze sculpture of the Argentina great, Diego Maradona, although the dubious likeness to the 1986 World Cup winner has attracted online ridicule.

The 12-foot statue features the 1986 World Cup winner with a healthy head of hair and holding aloft the trophy he helped Argentina win in Mexico, but bears little resemblance to the then 25-year-old captain of the side.

Some online commenters said the statue looked more like the former England manager Roy Hodgson, former NBA star Larry Bird, Bobby Ewing from TV show 'Dallas' or "someone's gran".

Awful.

This statue sculpting nonsense has to stop, it never looks even remotely close and ends up as a joke.

That statue looks more like Paul Mccartney than Maradona.

feck man, imagine going to see your statue unveiled and it looks like Adrian Chiles

For some reason I’m significantly more disturbed by the hands and fingers than by the face.

Nothing beats the Cristiano Ronaldo statue, this was as bad as that lady who tried to restore a famous Jesus painting and ended up with a monkey.

I have to say, as far as statues go, I like Thierry Henry's one the best so far. Not that I know of all of them.

Who is being commissioned to make a statue that looks like that, and why was it not nipped in the bud well before being made public? This is a player who's the best of all time for quite a few people - how can those, on either side of work revolving around this statue, think it should be a go when it looks nothing like him?

I just don't get it.

Can't they just use 3D printers now? At least they'd look a bit like the person.

McCartney thinks the first 30 seconds of this video delivers:

Thats exactly what i was thinking, digital 3d artists seems the way to go.

There can't be as many sculptors around as there used to be in the past. So it stands to reason there will be less good ones as well, which seems to be the case from the look of some of these recent statues.

This one's worse than the Ronaldo one, where do they find these artists. I could craft a better likeness with my own feces on a hung over sunday morning..

And Maradona is an easy one as well. You could just do Riquelme with an Afro and it's in the ballpark.

Why are statues these days so poor? From yonks ago with things like Napoleon etc they were pretty much spot on.

Is it a case of them being cheaper and not actually sculpted these days?

It's the lack of death threat. At the time butchering the statue of a powerful leader wasn't well received.

Excellence in art is part of a bygone era. The vast majority of art students today are being taught about conceptualism and post-modernism so they don't develop actual technique and rely instead on being edgy to cause shock

Did you meet him or how are you able to judge that?
I agree otherwise

And how do you know this? It might be true, but without actually having seen a photograph of, say, Napoleon or whoever then it's difficult to say.

Is it me or does the WC trophy look way too big and naff too?

Tbf many statues (recent years) don't commemorate the person who its supposed to be very well.

The one outside Old Trafford that's supposed to be Sir Alex Ferguson is a bit of a disaster in my opinion and doesn't honor him well.

Barely gets a mention though.

That Ronaldo one always gets me

The facial expression is actually hilarious.

Maradona could have provided that, too. One of his disciples might just have issued one after seeing this abomination.

Compared to the recent monstrosities we've seen, it looks like it was sculpted by Michaelangelo or Donatello or at least one of the other turtles.

So many of these are tragic - and whilst the sentiment is nice, i'd be a bit embarrassed if they were meant to honour me.

Makes you appreciate some of the Ancient sculptures you see in places like Rome / Greece - These modern sculptors aren't fit to lace the boots of those from hundreds of years ago.

It's mostly the hair that does it on the Maradona statue.

The SAF one bothers the hell out of me.
