Tunisia came out of it fairly well. Granted they're not yet topping any global indexes when it comes to progressive metrics, but they've adopted a form of democracy that seems to be functioning relatively healthily after deposing of a tyrannous dictator. The country is relatively stable too.
Nah. They're back in the shit.

No I think anyone killing themselves in protest is a form of mental illness. Sets a dangerous precedent and should not be lauded

So a man hurting himself and no one other sets a dangerous precedent? The murdering of thousands of children is totally fine though?

What's with these IOF freaks posing with women's underwear? The images keep popping up.

a precedent for others to seek some sort of martyrdom by killing themselves

This could be good news ?

The Biden administration has said in many different ways that they want to make sure that this ceasefire will be temporary, so that Israel can continue the liquidation at a later date, maybe when the heat has reduced a little.

It still needs to be agreed on by both Hamas and Israel which hasn't happened yet. It's a similar case to the last proposal but most likely the pressure has increased on both of them to reach some kind of a middle ground.

Ramadan starts soon. Usually calm things down then.

Think it has to do with some prophecies. Like the boots on the ground one in Syria.

I can't play this at work yet, but were his last words on CNN "Israel Forever"?
“I’ll no longer be complicit in genocide. I’m about to engage in an extreme form of protest. But compared to what people have been experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonisers it’s not extreme at all. This is what our ruling class has decided will be normal.”

For the ones that are into these kind of long-form essays, I'd recommend this. I don't think it's going to change a lot of minds, but it has some good points about this conflict, the role of the media, the role of politicians, etc. He is able to articulate and contextualize some of the feelings I have about this, better than I probably could myself. I've enjoyed his work on many other topics, so I was eager to this a listen as well.

"Both sides" bullshit as expected. Putting up Hamas as the counterpart to Israel just legitimizes what Israel is doing.

Israel government is worse because is supposed to be a democratic government with democratic values. They are both terrorist institutions with Israel government with a 75 history of terrorism, raping, killing, stealing land, kidnapping and torturing and Hamas 40 years the same but losing land

Israel have attacked worshippers in Al Aqsa mosque the last few years during Ramadan.

And they put/showed all that on CNN?

They read it aloud, and also recount how he yelled "Free Palestine" as he was burning.

I can not recommend watching the actual video (which CNN didn't do either). It's pretty disturbing.

Hamas barely featured for a mere few seconds in the whole segment. Who would you put as the counterpart when there is now no government in the West Bank?

I guess you're also not a fan of his idea of METO () then.

I guess an ongoing genocide being conducted with impunity just doesn't lend itself very well to Stewarts brand of chirpy humor. That's just my opinion though. It actually made me kind of angry watching it, but I suppose it's good that some people can see the funny side. He could have used his platform to mention unlawful killings in the West Bank, unlawful killings of journalists and medical personal, Israeli civilians cheering on the slaughter, Israeli civilians blocking aid from entering Gaza, IDF soldiers destroying homes and stealing possessions from refugees, and I could go on. But he didn't do any of that.

Agreed. It was surprisingly underwhelming from Stewart.

It felt like watching a deleted scene from a dystopian film. I couldn’t stop thinking how it would look if Stewart was making jokes about another genocide. Making his silly faces and pretending to take notes as footage of the Rwandan genocide or the Holocaust plays in the background. The segment felt incredibly hollow and one of those things people in the future will look back on in horror at.

As the political content. Stewart is mostly stuck in the mid to late 2000’s so the guy world view is extremely outdated. I’ve watched his last 3 big set pieces and genuinely a quick wiki search would be more informative.

A right-wing Israeli mob came to my family’s home yesterday to search for me, threatening close family members who fled to another town in the middle of the night. I am still getting death threats and had to cancel my flight home. This happened after Israeli media and German politicians absurdly labeled my Berlinale award speech - where I called for equality between Israelis and Palestinians, a ceasefire and an end to apartheid - as ‘antisemitic’. The appalling misuse of this word by Germans, not only to silence Palestinian critics of Israel, but also to silence Israelis like me who support a ceasefire that will end the killing in Gaza and allow the release of the Israeli hostages - empties the word antisemitism of meaning and thus endangers Jews all over the world. As my grandmother was born in a concentration camp in Libya and most of my grandfather’s family was murdered by Germans in the holocaust, I find it particularly outraging that German politicians in 2024 have the audacity to weaponize this term against me in a way that endangered my family. But above all else, this behavior puts Palestinian co-director Basel Adra’s life in danger, who lives under a military occupation surrounded by violent settlements in Masafer Yatta. He is in far greater danger than I am. I’m happy our award winning film, No Other Land, is sparking an important international debate on this issue - and I hope that millions of people watch it when it comes out this year. Sparking a conversation is why we made it. You can have harsh criticism of what me and Basel said on stage without demonizing us. If this is what you’re doing with your guilt for the holocaust - I don’t want your guilt.

Important statement.

Who does the administration think this is winning over ? At this point it seem every leak or news is designed to piss off voters.

i think Dem partisans like it because they can point to this stuff (without bothering witbh the specifics) and say biden is minimizing the damage.

I did see someone on the forum today describe the genocide as a “policy disagreement”. The Dem partisans still going strong.
That's exactly what I felt.
I guess at end of the day comedians even the ones that still behind desks in suits are just clowns. When they have to talk about serious issues it really shows how useless their platform is.
