The rewards from winning both competitions are exactly the same. Why is one considered more important than the other?

Er... no.
The FA cup has a huge place not only in the annlay of English football but more pertinently in the history of Utd. as a club. Some of our greatest perfomances have come in this competition and some of our toughest defeats.
Look back to the 1958 season for instance. The Busby babes having already romped the title lost the final v. villa after their golakeeper was so badly injured in a tackle which today yould never be allowed he had to leave the pitch. With no subs at that time Utd played with 10 men and an outfielder in goal and not surprisingly lost.
The first game that Utd. played the next season after the tragedy at Munich was in the FA cup (v. Sheff Wednesday I think). They won with a scratch team and went on to reach the final in one of the great all time feats of our or any other club. In the final (v. Bolton) history repeated itself - Nat Lofthouse clattered our keeper who went off and we lost - but the spirit of our great club had been reborn.
As for victories how about 1977 vs. the great Liverpool team of Emlyn Hughes, Tommy Smith and Tiny Tears. They had already clinched the championship and were playing in their first EC final on the next Wednesday - while we were a top 5 team with little real claim to be any better. We won a scrappy game 2-1 to win our ONLY TROPHY in the years between 1968-1983 and this win allowed us to become the first team to win the Trophy in 1999.
There are countless other great games - and every other top team in England has their own collection - yes even the scousers.
The Worthless cup by contrast was invented in 1960, was boycotted by top clubs until 1968 and has never been anything other than a nice addition to a clubs trophy list. Who knows who won it in 1976 or 1972 or 1985 for instance - while most true football fans of any club could easily recall the FA cup winners of these seasons (clue one of them was us!)
The FA is class - yes I'd rather see us win the PL or CL but a good cup run is trmendous fun and part of what makes English football special.

I agree totally with you. Tradition is a dying ingredient in football and that is why the FA Cup is so important

The same could be said for poo fans 15-20 years ago.
Why so bitter?

I think its Roy Keane knocked it as pretty worthless.
You know how it is with some people, monkey see, monkey do

The sparkle only seems to have gone because the media tells us it has. It's up to all fans to same differently!

This annoyed me, and a few MU people are on record as saying that the Title and the European Cup are the priorities. Yet how their tune has changed now after a silverware-less season.
I love MU but my club is not above criticism and maybe last season when we won nothing was the kick up the arse that MU needed to stop being so bloody arrogant and get stuck into what it is about - winning everything in sight and even if that does not eventuate, at least genuinely trying to win everything in sight.

i agree with you to some extent.
However, SAF has realized the hard way that it was not possible to win everything in sight, because players are not robots.
Playing football during Winter is also tradition of English football, but it has clearly hampered England's chances of doing well in the Summer competitions. It has also given injuries to countless players - many players playing in the EPL were injured and couldn't take part in the last WC.
For United as a team, SAF decided long ago that the Worthless Cup had to go. The FA Cup is something different as many have said in this post. Winning everything in sight is a dream, not a reality. Even if it happens it will come at a cost of injuring more players.
We have a chance to do that this year because many of our first team have been injured for 2-3 months... so they're still fresh in January.. 5 months of gruelling football will not hurt them as much as 8 months of gruelling football would have.

My god, history, prestige, emotion, there's nothing like it, and United fans have it in their hearts. Were we the only PL club with a full house the other day?
Of course!

I agree with you.
I think last season Fergie realised what effect just a single defeat can have on the team and this year he has made an effort to play his strongest team whenever possible.
Who knows maybe the Worthington could be the first part of a historic quadruple.
