On the one hand you get to see if they can do the business on the big stage, on the other hand if the player you have in mind has a brilliant world cup you may not be able to afford him afterwards...

Hopefully we wont miss out on someone this way

Yes. Like Kenyon said, they won't be making any impulse buys. We already have our targets, the World Cup is an extra scouting mission to see which of the targets is best suited, in my opinion.

Now, lets move this to the right forum... ;)

What if a particular target is being tracked by other clubs and they are keen on concluding the deal ASAP? Would kenyon sit idly by and wait until the WC is over or make his move quickly too?

I think it was foolish of PK to say it, things may not happen according to his time-table.

The values of established players are unlikely to change much. For example Veron cost 28mill, based on last season now worth considerably less. Playing for one of the favourites, possibly playing a leading role he is likely to make up the drop in value with above average, rather than great, performances.

I imagine we have asked clubs of leading players we are interested in, to notify us if they want to sell. This may happen before or after the world cup.

The minor players, in world terms (Duff etc) could double/triple in value with one outstanding performance. We need to buy this level of player before the WC.

I don't think these tournaments mean a great deal from a club perspective. Proborsky looked great in 1996 and I thought we'd done our money on Jaap Stam.

I worry about delaying transfer moves until after the World Cup.
United seem to be terribly slow when it comes to transfer dealings - and there's always the danger that someone will jump in and poach the player we're after.
We can see it happening already. Kevin Hofland has long been mentioned as a target but now it looks like Barcelona are coming in for him after no approaches from United.
Is this going to be the case with Ayala, Thuram, Nesta etc?
What if we delay moving for Ayala and, as reported, Arsenal come in.
The same with Thuram - the likes of Barcelona are looking to rebuild and could easily snap him up before we even get a chance to talk to him.
If players are available now then we should go and try to get them now. And as for people saying this would be 'panic buying', well, Peter Kenyon says United already have their targets and have been watching them for some time.
Why put it all off until after the World Cup and risk a similar pattern to last summer when most of the players we were (reportedly) after were gone?

Last summer was totally different, we didnt 'wait' for anyone, but the players who we wanted just didn't come, like Lizarazu staying, Thuram going to Juventus...

I still feel Kenyon's words were only meant so that he wouldn't have people knocking at his door a week after the season ended asking 'Where are our new players'. To be honest, any transfer dealings with WC players are difficult now because most of them are in training camps or already in Japan/South Korea, but I'm sure the club would make sure he doesn't miss out by just waiting. If a player we want is 'transferrable' now, I'm sure we'd go for it. I'm not sure it's the case however.

Bad choice with Hofland though, so we were reported to want him and we obviously DON'T want him, at least not now...

I know where you're coming from. I'm willing to bet United will sign a player or two when they're good and ready. I'd hate to think they would miss out on a player by waiting around. But the impression we (the fans) are given is that nothing is being done. I'm quite happy for all the work to be done behind the scenes and a signing to be sprung on us when we're not expecting it. Still, it is frustrating not knowing what's going on - but I'm sure it has to be that way
:(

Fergie has always been very secretive about his transfer dealings so I guess we have to be patient and wait.

We should only start getting worried if there's no sign of any transfers being concluded come August.
