Rio Oh Rio Ferdinand,
Went to Leeds and thought it was shit

to the tune of More Than A feeling by top stadium rock outfit Boston

You'll love this one then Sharkey:

My eyes have seen the glory
of the coming of the king
When Eric joined United
the Stretford did sing
Now Rio's joined as well
more trophies he will bring
And this is what he said:

KISS MY ARSE YOU YORKSHIRE BASTARDS
KISS MY ARSE YOU YORKSHIRE BASTARDS
KISS MY ARSE YOU YORKSHIRE BASTARDS
AS THE REDS GO MARCHING ON ON ON

from the Red Issue as well. Boyle's column, bless him.

Sigh... On my last trip to Leeds I was spat at, got stuff chucked at me, called "fecking slanty eyes" to my face, got told to "go back to China", all by a bunch of Elland Road wankers wearing the white shirt.

All for walking down the wrong street alone.

I don't need to go there for a football match. If I want to get told I'm scum I can go there anytime.

I'm sorry if you feel I'm tarring all of you with the same brush, but if it happens almost everytime I go to Leeds, there can't be that many Leeds fans who aren't complete utter shiteheads

I gather you're white mate. There are enough racists in Leeds believe me. Don't turn a blind eye to a problem just because you aren't on the receiving end.

Yes I am white and I have been racially abused by blacks, asians and Chinese in my 40 years of living in Yorkshire......my point, that is sailing right over your head, is that you should not generalise.....racists exist everywhere and are made up of all colours.

fair point.

but why have leeds got such a bad image??

don't say its due to the Bowyer and Woodgate affair... Leeds has always had a racist image.(club and town)

There has always been a large immigrant population in Leeds - from the Jews in the 40's/50's to the Asians in the 70's to the Blacks in the 80's.

It is no excuse for racism but it does partly explain it. I don't know if it is REALLY worse than anywhere else...I don't suppose it is.

I grew up outside Leeds in Batley and there was a steady invasion of Pakistanis/Indians and it did cause problems...just like it did in every other town I expect.

I have followed Leeds for nearly 40 years and can count the incidents of racial trouble on one hand.

Point taken. But in my personal experience, I have never had trouble at Old Trafford, St James' Park, White Hart Lane or Filbert Street. And of all the cities through out Britain that I have visited, I've only ever gotten into a fight in Leeds.

My point, which you understandably are not taking, is that most non-whites (I should really say Asians and Chinese) get a lot of trouble at Elland Road. Perhaps they get it elsewhere too, I don't know, but that's besides the point. There are degrees of racial abuse, as with everything else, and what they dish out around Elland Road is pretty bad.

Just how many times have you been to ER and suffered abuse?

Just because you got into a fight in Leeds does not mean it is a racial city .

Yeah i can recall you mentioning that....

I've been to Leeds a few times and it deffo has a 'racist' atmosphere... i've even seen the NF/BNP openly campaining in the centre.. now thats never happened in Manchester town centre, infront of my eyes... and i've lived here virtually all my life..

Batley is like all small towns.. very similar to Oldham or Burnley.. Leeds on the other hand should be compared to Manchester......both are fairly big..and have a large ethnic population...first the jews, then blacks...and then lastly the Asians settled here.. yet we don't have the same 'racist' image.

I suppose I can offer an explanation - one reason is that there are too few ethnic groups. It's quite hard to be racist in London, for example, since there are so many different kinds of people so everyone learns to get along. There's a large Oriental population in Liverpool, along with the usual Asian / black / West Indian communities, so it seems to work out a bit better.

Its in places where there are just 2 or 3 different groups where you have problems. :( Sad but true.

I've been for 2 matches at Elland Road and been spat at once and had a pie thrown at me the other time. I go to Leeds a lot to see some mates and so far, not counting the matches, I've had run ins 6 times. Of which 4 times, the guy yelling at me was wearing a Leeds jersey.

My mate does live in a dodgy area, I suppose, but it seems to happen too often.

Leeds has its Chinese areas and Asian areas like you mention Liverpool has...I really disagree that its record of racism is any worse than any other city.

Giggzy...I have seen NF supporters at many grounds in the 70's and have not seen them at Leeds for years. I would say Bradford was a more racially tense city than Leeds.

As a club Leeds have done more than most to try to include ethnic minorities in the club...they even won an award a while ago.

There will always be racism and we all have to our bit to eradicate it as far as possible.

You should not sell shit pies then. ;)

Two people from the 10's of 1000's that go to ER is no big deal is it?

I am sorry you have had a rough time in my city ...were you to blame in any way for the fights? - I ask as I have never had a fight in Leeds in over 40 years and with you it seems a regular occurence.

Yes, I remember Harpal Singh (?)... I hope he's still there though. Shouldn't he be breaking through to the first team by now?

Leeds' Chinatown is pretty small... the largest Chinese communities are in Liverpool, Glasgow London and Manchester. I can tell you that Leeds has a pretty poor rep among Orientals as a place to live though. That said, its also because that Liverpool is by far and away the place to be if you're Chinese.

Lee Bowyers mate Harpal Singh (FACT) is still at Leeds and has been given a new long-term contract - he is a great talent and will hopefully break through into the first team more this season.

There seems to be a hell of a lot of Chinese in Leeds given that it has, according to you, a poor reputation.

I've only really been in one fight - as in I retaliated. All the other times I have just taken it and walked away. Its hard to keep my temper, but the consequences of hitting back are pretty dire.

I can't speak for more than what I've heard, but a few of my friends have had problems at Elland Road too. My mate has stopped going to watch Leeds because he gets too much stick.

Can I ask how many Asian people you see at the ground?

Both good to hear. I wish Harpal all the best as he's carrying the Asian community's flag. And the more Chinese in Leeds the quicker people get used to them, and the better its rep becomes. Diversity is usually a good thing.

I have just been reading about 'Chinatowns' in Manchester and Liverpool...the fact that Liverpool was a port gave rise to a chinese population and it expanded into Manchester with laundries opening....both areas have suffered badly since the early 90's and it is only now a resurgence is beginning.

One of the more succesful Chinatowns is where I live now...Newcastle.

As far as Asians at Leeds games...there are very few. I used to have Asian friends and when I asked why they did not want to go watch Leeds they said it was not their game.

I see that totally differently...I see him as a lad from Yorkshire who has come through the academy, youth team, reserves and into the first team squad of the club he has supported all his life.
