Is the best of Federer gone?

I don't think so. It's not like it was a slight decline.

He went from king of the world, to playing poorly at the Australian Open and now his form has deserted him. A major loss in confidence I reckon, rather than a decline in skill.

Does he have a coach yet?

This and las week's tournaments are the biggest in the master series (this tourney used to be called Key Biscane, the '5th grandslam')... Federer is losing whenever I see him coming up against a SLIGHTLY tricky opponent... the first real test in a tournament, and he immediately obliges and fails... been like that in the five or so he's played... bit of a joke so far this year.

I recall Sampras declining (for his standards) around this age as well.

Maybe it has something to do with the infectious mononucleosis which he overcame at the end of the last year. And he didn´t know about that.

On the other side you would expect a better health care for people like Federer.

I hope he finds his feet again soon. Would be sad if he stopped so short of Sampras record.

Excuse my ignorance..... What age is he now? I thought he has a few more years at the top left in him. Maybe he should just concentrate on being king on grass? Although as Nadal improves on that surface you never know.

Hes spent too much time with Henry in those gillette commercials now hes shite as well

Becks - Lost it
Henry - Lost it
Federer - Lost it

If Tiger loses it as well we'll know that Gillette products make you shit.

He turns 27 this year.

Saw some of the match last night, Roddick served brilliantly but still by Federer's high standards he was poor. Not sure if it's still the effects of illness or whether he's just in a decline.

Still, wouldn't surprise me if after all this he turned up and won the French open on Nadal's own surface.

I refuse to believe Federer is gone, now. He has far too much talent to simply decline in such a fashion.

I watched the whole match, he had some brilliant moves in his style on important points, but also unexplainable mistakes. Wouldn't suprise me either if he won the French Open, he really needs it and it would be a shame if he didn't win all four Grand Slams

Roddick has just beaten Federer after 5 years or something. Another big tournament Federer is out. Is he past his best?

Big tournament my ass, nothing is big for Federer save the Grand Slams, he did lose in OZ but had mono, I will reserve my judgement til post Wimbledon and US Open, both of which he will be favorite to win

I'd bet Davydenko can't wait to play Federer next... and a whole host of other top 20 players who used to get battered by him.

Lately, whenever he comes against any decent opponent (he usually destroys), you feel it's the worst time for him to play them... who's next to break his duck against Federer?

he has just become human thats all...

Exactly, its absolutely insane to think he's going to consistently win EVERY single year. This was bound to happen and with the new talent and challenge coming through Federer was destined to suffer a "blip" at some stage.

He'll come back stronger i reckon.

Still the man to beat, he's the best player ever considering the way the game has changed tactically. Legend in his own time.

He's recovering from glandular fever... takes at least 6 months.

The man speaks the truth. Reports of his demise have been vastly exaggerated, he'll break the grand slam record, no worries. Most players on the circuit wouldn't be turning in the level of performance he is given his physical state for the last few months.

He will find his feet again when it really matters. Would be a shame for him not to surpass Sampras.

Dravid.

An Indian Cricket legend former captain and player. He endorsed Gillette and he lost it since then.

Woods is starting to decline slightly, so I guess the "Gillette Myth" continues on.

so 4 months later, what do you say?

1 Rafael Nadal ESP 6700
2 Roger Federer SUI 5930
3 Novak Djokovic SRB 5105
4 David Ferrer ESP 2865
5 Nikolay Davydenko RUS 2700
6 Andy Murray GBR 2415
7 David Nalbandian ARG 1975
8 Andy Roddick USA 1845
9 James Blake USA 1825
10 Stanislas Wawrinka SUI 1695

I think the best of him is gone yes. I don't think he'll ever dominate the game in the way he did and thats because Novak and Rafa are more difficult to beat than the rivals he's had in the past.

However I do think he'll bounce back to become a serious challenger again. He had the glandular fever at the start of the year and then the crushing defeat by Nadal in Paris. He proved he's got the mental strength to come back from two sets down at Wimbeldon to take Nadal to a final set.

I think his confidence is very low at the minute but he's got a natural talent for Tennis. Form is temporary, class is permanent and all that.

Yeah I agree his era of domination has gone, but he'll still be up there for the next few years.

But what's certain is that the aura of invincibility he once had has been well and truly shattered.

What part of beating the rest of the field at a Major Championships when you can barely walk constitutes decline exactly?

Gillette go for established sports stars at their peak. Of course they start to decline soon after, hence it being called 'peak'. Show me the sports athlete that doesn't decline at some point!

That said I have that bloody gillette razor, and its crap. Especially when I press the button, at which point it rips my face. And the 'precision razor' on the back is the least impressive thing ever, I'd have more precision. I've have more successful precision shaving myself with bullets fired from a kalashnikov. I continue to use my 'old technology' razor instead

So 2 weeks later what do you say?

He looked close to his best today. He just needs to get over the mental block he seems to have when playing Nadal and pray that Nadal has an off-day at the French.

Tiger Woods is a god.

This has never been in doubt, who wins a major with a broken leg and torn ACL, let alone competes in it.

Today certainly showed there is more to come from the one known as Federer, the tournament showed that Murray has a bright future himself

He needs someone like Monfils to knock Nadal out of the French and let him get into the Final against anybody but Rafa

Rafa has shown against Murray that he is well beatable. Maybe it was a confidence thing with Federer that he believes he can't beat Nadal. Losing the Wimbledon Final (his best surface) really hurt him. Hopefully this US Open win will bring him back towards his best. He is certainly not finished anyway.

Yeah, what I'd say too.
