Is it worth getting a Playstation 3...

yep, get the HDTV first, otherwise you can get a lot of games on the PS2 still including Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

I always used to hate renting DVDs, as you could always be sure that it would decide to either not play at all or skip all over the place when you got into the last 20 minutes. At least with Blu-ray that doesn't happen.

I absolutely fecking love watching movies on Blu-Ray, with decent surround sound.

Have watched There will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men on blu-ray in the last few weeks. Awesome stuff.

I'll do the Alan Davies QI bit then.
Why's that then?

Must say the has never ever happened to me.

Both PS3 and XB360 games look great on a normal widescreen TV. The only problem sometimes is reading the text.

are these the norm for SDTVs in Europe? widescreens, while available, never caught on in North America until the HD revolution.

That makes no sense. If there was damage then obviously that would be the case but you can't blame the format for human caused damage. The chances of a DVD malfunctioning aren't very high (without damage caused by humans). Anyway aren't blu-ray discs easier to damage?

I got my PS3 before getting a HDTV or any Blu-ray films, still got plenty of use out of it.

If you have an LCD monitor with HDCP, you can hook it up to that and get HD quality. The 360 on the other hand hooks up to any LCD so you may be better off with one of those till you get a HD TV.

The chances of them malfunctioning are very high, scratches, fingermarks, jam, you name it.

BDs have a special protective coating, it's almost impossible to feck them up.

WHAT!!?!!! You guys didn't have widescreen till HD?

That's not right. They were available but not at all popular, like if you had one people would think you were a gimp or something. I think they also cost about five thousand dollars, which is why people would question your character if you owned one.

Plasma was a tech that folks were willing to pay that kind of money for about 5 years ago. Now, wide screen LCD HDTVs can be had for a few hundred bucks, so everyone and their dog has them, or so it would seem here.

Why because we had better tv's than you?

That's possible, few ever really consider the regional variations in the international television market.

My old CRT is something like this, and cost €700.
