Is the current squad core the same way as the '68 team..........

We have the best Irish player of his generation who has a problem with booze and his national team.
We have a core squad of English players who are becoming more and more pre-occupied with England than United (IMO).
Our manager, now Knighted, has hummed and hawed over his future and created uncertainty at the club over the last few seasons. He, like Sir Matt, is Manchester United.
Our squad has diminished in size relative to our rivals Liverpool and Arsenal and, consequentaly, they have more than gained ground on us.

And most important of all........

The legacy of the treble year is beginning to become a weight on the shoulders of the team and every player who joins. In the same way as 68 was always hanging over the club in the years after it was achieved, is there a danger that 99 will start to become something that the squad can never hope to emulate again.

If we're not careful, and this season in that regard, United could end up repeating history all over again. An emerging Liverpool could become the dominant force in English football, built around their traditional club ethics of hard work and team spirit. While United could become a club that keeps talking about that night in Barcelona for ever.

We have to win the Champion's League again soon or 99 will start to become part of the myths and legends that can actually work against United.

Or maybe that's just me being overly dramatic.

Ermmm.
Well, I thought that Keano has just admitted that he had to give up the drink to keep his career alive.
And, Errrmmm, I think Keano is the best Irish player of his generation.

Not directly comparable with Bestie but surely you would agree Keano and Bestie have a simillar story.

I see the similarities, but its a whole different ball game.

Now that SAF has decided to stay he seems to be more fired up than ever to put things right at all levels.

Plus, and more importantly, the current squad is still young. The 68 team was sooooo good that no body could replace any of them and they grew too old.

Plus2, we've already won the title twice since 99

One point does hold true: We have to win that bleedin European Cup (and at least twice more, just to shut the Scousers up!)

So what you mean is that he had a problem with booze.

No I mean he has a problem with booze.
To the point where he can't handle being around other players boozing.

Don't get me wrong. I'm full of admiration for the way the guy has focused on his career and eliminated the drink and all. Keano himself would say he has a problem with drink and is a different person after drink. So I don't think that problem is in the past tense. Either way, I'm just making a comparison between Keane and Best.

Disagree. Paul Mc Grath. A drunkard but committed. Best player to pull on an Irish shirt in Keane's genre

Well, your first post didn't read anything like that so you'll understand if I took it to imply that he has a drink problem.

Fair enough, now that I re-read it is doesn't seem very fair on our Roy <img src="graemlins/nervous.gif" border="0" alt="[Nervous]" />

But Keane and McGrath aren't really of the same generation are they?

Christ. I'm sorry I mentioned the bould Keane at all.

The whole point of this post was to compare 68 with the current squad and how the treble could become a new 'albatros'

Speaking of history to repeat itself, you can look at it that way too:

It's the season after the world cup, where one of our players had a bad experience in his National team (Becks 98, Keano 2002).

In the past season we lost the double to Arsenal (97-98, 2001-2002).

We are playing a qualification match to get into the CL (Lodz 98, Hungrians with a weird name 2002).

now all thats missing is the we sign a striker and Escude (to compare with Stam (RIO), Yorke, Blomquist).

I'm not saying that were gonna win the treble this year, i'm just saying that these omens (good or bad) can be looked at from both ways...
