MANCHESTER, England, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Manchester United's Phil Neville hopes an impressive derby performance on Saturday will improve his chances of winning a new midfield role at Old Trafford.
Neville has played mainly as a left back for United and England. But injuries to Roy Keane and Nicky Butt have seen him drafted into the United midfield and he is expected to retain that role against Manchester City at Maine Road.
"I am still only a makeshift midfielder," Neville told the club's website on Friday. "But if I keep maintaining the levels I am doing, then people might look at me a little bit differently in terms of me ending up being a midfielder.
"I have found midfield a great challenge, and Saturday is another challenge. Deep down I have always thought I could play there and I have always loved it there.
"Now I'm enjoying it more than ever. To do a successful job at Maine Road can only help me."
Neville, who has never lost to City in six derby appearances, feels that if he can cope with the intense atmosphere of Saturday's derby clash, he will have proved he is capable of filling the midfield role permanently.
"It will give me a lot of confidence going into that month if I do well in the derby. It's going to be a new experience and a massive challenge.
"The next month is going to be a crucial test for me because I will be coming up against some of the best midfielders in this country and Europe. I have to make sure my level of performance doesn't drop and I must get better."
