Is Fergie looking for a new 1st team goalie?

Oscar Cordoba?...Jussi Jasskelainen? Trying to second guess stony faced Fergie is difficult...but...I detect he isn't completely happy with Barthez this season.
He may not want to replace Barthez, but he certainly wants to put more pressure on him.
Van Der Gouw should leave in the summer...United's younger keepers aren't up to much...Carroll is able as a back-up but nothing special.
I expect United to buy a highly talented keeper in the summer to push Barthez for the 1st spot.

AGAIN ? Is it an obsession or what ? Fergie doesn't have the same opinion as you about Barthez and he has always stood by him, even when he had a hard time. It wouldn't be intelligent to make him think he's not wanted anymore at United at a time when his confidence seems to be back, as we're going to play important games.

Just another rumour !

I don't want it to be another rumour...I think Barthez is a weak link.
How often do I have to say this?...he is just too SMALL...his reach is very limited, and in this era of dead-ball experts he is a liabilty.
Did anybody see the way Southampton's James Beattie hassled him during corners?
Barthez just cannot command his penalty box.
He is a good shot-stopper, at his best he is very alive to things...but
His kicking?...suppossed to be one of his positives...turns out...its one of his weaknesses.

I can see where you're all comimg from with Barthez. He is a very loveable character and he does have king kong balls...but he is just too small to be a goalkeeper.
For me ,Barthez is just one step above that Mexican midget joker keeper Campos.
Too many United goals this season Barthez has let in and got close to...why hasn't he quite got there?...wouldn't have anything to do with the fact he's 4 inches shorter in height and 2 inches shorter in reach than most keepers?

He's not too small to be a goalkeeper, he has a great spring and Fergie knows that ! You're obsessed with his height but it's not at 30 years old that the world will discover that he was too small to be a keeper ! He had the same height last year and he had the best defence. The tallest keepers can't reach every balls too.And he can reach the bar, contrary of what you say.

As for his kicking and distribution, they can lead to goals too. The penalty last Tuesday has followed a good Barthez clearance and another one almost give us a goal too.

And it's just a rumour.

Anyway, I know Fergie doesn't have the same opinion as you.

I think Fergie has changed his opinion of Barthez this season. We will look for a strong goalkeeper capable of pushing Barthez for the 1st spot.

Barthez problems this season have not been a question of ability but of mentality.

He is a mecurial, type of character like Eric was in open play which is fantastic except he is a keeper and therefore less oppurtunity to express himself.

Ferguson knows this and therefore gave Barthez a "carte blanche" to do as he pleases which given earlier mistakes in the season has now been taken away with an obvious stern talk at carrington on cold monday morning. Note the change in Barthez since the arsenal case.

But dont confuse that with ferguson wanting to replace him, fergie knows the sheer class of the man, his agility, shot stopping and distribution of the ball is second to one, and of course if nothing else at least we have an extra penalty taker who you could imagine would have the balls to step and be counted if called upon.

Viva la barthez.

maybe we should sign Liverpools Dudek, they are after all a selling club,
maybe we could sign Pool up as our feeder club Antwerp style ;)

And you're thinking is based on the fact that... ahem?

Sir Alex stood by Barthez through all his trouble, did not drop him even when putting on Carroll instead of Fabien would have seem reasonable...

You're talking out of hope, rather than any sort of knowledge of fact. So just end this with this threat please.

Is Landreau a better goalkeeper than Barthez? No, not at the moment. This whole 'Fergie doesn't trust Barthez' is garbage.

Agreed. If he didn't trust him, he would've been benched at some point. Fergie stood by him all the way.

Agreed and well done Fergie, after the Arsenal game it was generally accepted that he would be dropped Jim Leighton style and would be doing well to get back in.
But hes responded to it all brilliantly and hasnt put a foot wrong since Christmas and shown what a class keeper he is.

We have concided goals very rarely due to his hight. The only two I can remember are the one aginst poo and sunderland. i think Schmikes would have stopped those. But that's it really, everybody has a week point.

Barthez may have gone a bit loopy on occasion this season, but Barthez himself said that the 2000 - 01 season was the first time that he hadnt made a major cock up. he is still capable of reaching a peformance level that few other keepers can.

The one against poo was more because he was advanced...The shot was unpredictable. I think his height is not a problem, because on the other hand, it allows him to run faster on short distance to claims balls, things a taller keeper won't do as easily.

Landreau had more than a good game in his young career. He is very good, his only weakness is in the air, as it was shown last Tuesday. But he's young enough to progress.

Yes, and his last press conference has just shown Redpie was wrong !

Frey is rated abroad because he plays for a great championship...Landreau plays in France, and some people seem to have discovered him after his big game against us. The fact is that Landreau has a chance to be keeper n°3 at the next World Cup, and nobody here talks about Frey, which is surely unfair. But he's still very young and will surely have his chance one day, the future is assured (for France) with those two talented keepers !

Shay Given is the best keeper in the world at the mo, does anyone agree?

He's shown world class consistancy throughout the majority of the season.

I think you're exaggerating slightly. The world's a big place.

What about this guy Ulrich Rame.....anyone know much about him?

Yes. He's another french keeper inferior to Barthez.
