Is any goalkeeper playing better than Barthez at the moment??

Ok he made a mistake against city... but can't really think of any other mistakes...

The save against Hamann was 1 of the old time greatest saves...

I know Cuducini and friedal are doing well too... but barthez on current form is looking unstoppable...

He would get my vote. But, then again, I am biased, perhaps?

all 3 keeprs are world class. when i saw the highlites of arsenal v blackburn it was unbelievable the saves friedel made.cudicini seems to be making great saves all the time and barthez is unstoppable at the moment. even if he does concede the squad have got the confidence of bagging in more goals than the opposition anyway.

I'm very happy that Barthez is our goalkeeper. <img src="graemlins/keano.gif" border="0" alt="[Keano]" />

Indeed. And let's remember that no goalkeeper is likely to go thru a season without a few mistakes. Nor is any other player come to that.

The guy is in good form, let's hope it continues. However,I have never been a big Barthez fan and I'm not suddenly going to change my mind. I just don't think he has the desired physical attributes you'd expect in a goalkeeper.
I have no problem with his "eccentric" nature. That's not the problem. Goalies are meant to be mad. I'd just like to put him on a stretching rack that's all.

But fair play to him. At the moment he is playing really well and full of confidence.
Just wish he had Dudek's reach is all.

Who ?

Landreau of course !

The thing with Fabien is that everyone seems quick to criticise him when he makes a mistake but slow to praise him when he has a great match. I don't think we would have picked up 6 points against Liverpool and Arsenal without him. He made a phenomenal save against Hamann and a great save against Pires (that most people missed, including the ref). That Arsenal match could have been very different if they had scored first. And what about yesterday's match where he made 2 excellent saves before Ruud scored his second? Don't know why Fabien doesn't seem to get the credit he deserves.

You just described what every goalkeeper's career is like. Hero one day, villain the next. He is everyone's hero right now, but watch what happens the next time he is beaten. IMO Fabien is a great keeper and we can't get much better, so just remember that the next time he makes a mistake. ;)

So he makes a few mistakes, but he makes many more great saves! This is a man who has done everything in the game and can still perform week in week out!

For me though his personality is his special asset! He's outgoing, flamboyant and very confident in his ability.

He is getting better and better too! Would we want a boring, sour German like Kahn or a sulking Spaniard like Casillas in our goal, I for one wouldnt! I'll take the rough with the smooth!

After all he is great entertainment!

How many other keepers in the world have had a shot from their own half (see Vs. Arsenal) this season??????

Agreed. He's making up for the gaffes he made last season. Keep it up man! <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" />

Cudicini would get my vote for GK of the half season, but if Barthez can keep up with this form then i'd be mad if he wasn't included in Premiership XI by the end of the season.

There's a problem tho, if our defence can play well throughout the season then Barthez won't get tested a lot and so maybe won't be considered for the GK of the year.

Friedel(?) is the obvious in-form keeper in the Prem at the moment.
Barthez may be in fantastic form right now, but hand on heart I'd still swap him for Dudek.

Swap Barthez for Dudek? You must be joking. Let's consider the facts:

1. Bart has won everything worth winning internationally and domestically, while Dudek has won... ???

2. Fab hasnt always had a world-class back four in front of him to back him up. Illustrated by the world cup, Dudek was lost when he found he actually had work to do with a crappy defence. Any keeper could keep clean sheets the way Pool's defence has been in recent seasons (not now).

3. Fab has been around for ages and ages, proving himself as a terrific keeper and not just a flash in the pan like Dudek.

Dudek has had his season in the sun and I'd be shocked if Kirkland didnt take over permanently.

In answer to the topic question: in a word - no. ;)

i think you overlooked redpie's status.. "WUM" and he's from Wum-shire.. i don't think you should have been surprise to hear he wanted Dudek in his fantasy wet-dream team. ;)

My status is out of my control. Apparently one weekend one of the the mods wanted to impress a prospective girlfriend and I got frozen in the land of Wumshire.
To be frank, I'm not that arsed. As long as I get to say what I want I'm happy.

i understand what you mean.. but saying you'd want to swap barthez for dudek doesn't help your cause and won't make anyone believe you're a United fan and isn't from Wum-shire IMO.

what's your reasons anyway? To say "hand on heart I'd still swap him for Dudek", means you must have something against Barthez to say the least.

I happen to think Barthez is overrated and a liability at set plays. He happens to be in great shot-stopping form right now so nobody is in the mood to listen.
Hey, I'm not shouting it from the rooftops. I know Fabien is better than Roy or Ricardo. Like I know Dudek will come good again for the Gypsies and the Blackburn keeper is the goalie of the prem season so far.

I just see that even when he's in form some people still criticize him...

I'm glad that in the space of 10 days he has killed the ghosts of Liverpool, Arsenal, and La Coruna. And shown to the English audience who he is really.

Like he said this week to L'Equipe "Sometimes you have problems in your life and it's hard to keep your concentration. You come to the game already tired because you think too much".

But he can do even better. I dream of a great performance in a Champion's league final.

Ha ha ha. He's 31, but now you decide "he hasn't the physical attributes you'd expect in a goalkeeper". OK,he's not the tallest of the keepers, but he jumps high, and if you look at taller keepers, you'll see they can reach all the balls too if they're not well placed. Just look at his 11 years career. He has not conceded more goals than other keepers (last year was the exception).
Anyway he has other physical qualities. He can run quicker than taller keepers. He has a great force in his arms (just look at his clearances with the hand, they're are sometimes "montruous"). His reflexes are great. I know the English are obssessed with the height of the keepers, this is a critic I've never heard in France.
Ferguson knows that.

Barthez has been in great form recently, coinciding with all of the back four performing well. Which came first the chicken or the egg??

IMO Friedel appears to be playing better from the games I have seen but that's because he has had to make more saves than Barthez because he hasn't got as good a defence in front of him.

Barthez is in top form at the moment, no doubt about that. But as for the season so far, I'd say both Friedel and Cudicini have been a tad more consistent.

Having said that, Barthez is playing out of his skin right now and he deserves to be praised.

So, well done Fabien, keep it going!

But form aside and in the cold light of day I'd still rather have Dudek or Cudicini in the United goal. Why? They may be bland and boring but I just think they are basically better all-round goalkeepers than Barthez.
What they have over Fabien is height and reach, it's as simple as that.
United still look vulnerable at corners and set-pieces from wide areas. Because Barthez struggles to command his box and is too easily crowded out that's why.
Direct free-kicks are another bugbear. Despite his athleticism this is another area where his size and lack of reach is a disadvantage.

Barthez is a good goalkeeper, and in the form he's in at the moment he's an outstanding goalkeeper. But he does have definite weaknesses to his game.
I just happen to think they are too fundemental to ignore, that's all.

Nothing personal Fab.

at the moment the bald frenchman is on top form. He single handedly (quite literally) saved us against Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.
I've always seen him as good but at the moment he is amazing. I actually trust Barthez at the moment.
:)

Agree totally. But he killed Deportivo La Coruna last season in La Coruna didn't he?

Fab's great. He's the quickest goalkeeper there is, and the only goalkeeper I've seen that can change direction once having committed himself.

Me too :D <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" />

Barhtez is playing well, but Cudicini's been the outstanding league goalkeeper since he arrived at Chelsea.
