Irish Politics

There’s literally feck all choice. I dislike both main parties and I will not vote for SF whilst Mary Lou is in charge. She needs to step aside and let the new progressives take charge who have no link to the past

Them having no candidates in Sligo/Leitrim is pretty disappointing. At least Shinners have 2 this time.

Yeah, if Strandhill and Rosses Point had a few more hipster returnees they would have put a candidate up. Otherwise, it's probably a good use of resources to focus elsewhere.

I'd be fecking shocked if the Shinners got two returned.

This is my candidate’s. A good assessment

I’ll probably give a vote to Ellen Murphy but beyond that I’m stuck. Ruth Coppinger is a neighbour, I don’t like her

Susanne Delaney

Independent

Claims the area where she lives is 85pc non-national, that her daughter is the only Irish child in her class and cannot understand the languages around her. She is standing as an Independent, but has been endorsed by far righters like Malachy Steenson. She says she is "not okay" with the landscape of the country changing. Susanne, also known as Suzie, has an axis with Stephen Kerr, who is running in Mayo, describing themselves as The Irish Inquiry media platform, according to a crowdfunding page.
She sounds like a hoot.

Yeah she is definitely a 'standout'.

Are we sure she actually lives in Ireland? And not abroad and is just confused.

She might live in the US or North Korea?

"I believe the biggest issue facing our country is government overreach and censorship"

He quite literally can't lose. Two of FF/FG/SF will be needed to form a coalition and FF are the only one of the three who could work with either of the other two.

Short of a national campaign where he personally punches every child in the country in the face, he'll be Taoiseach again.
I believe they’ve held extensive discussions on how that would play publicly.

What's the fear? FF will happily go in with SF if they poll much higher than FG, which I think is a real possibility.
That's the hope. I want FG to poll less than 17%. Less than 5% would be best but you get the point. SF/FF can be tolerated by most of the nation I think. FF/FG will be such a fecking kick in the teeth to the electorate if, and that's the way the polls have it, have three parties with similar polling mandates (again). But the one party is locked out.

Other than that, I hope for a massive SF underestimation by the polls and a >25% polling. It's possible - not like for like but they are the only mainstream change candidate and the pollsters had Trump down by 3-5% in various cases as to what he actually polled. SF are different, but there is something there. I just don't want to see that margin, whatever it is, going to actual right ring candidates. Independents or parties. Or FG.

tl;dr a SF government is due. Coalition is the only way and there should be serious talks of that if it all pans out as expected. Otherwise the nation's political system really is a joke and it's one of the better ones in pure electoral terms in Europe.

Find it odd that Ireland became so much anti imigration, considering what Irish emigrants faced when they moved in roves to the US.

Yep. They don't see it. I had a very uncomfortable conversation last week with an Irish American home for a visit who was giving out about immigrants in both Ireland and America. You couldn't make that shit up. It's fecking outrageous.

The numbers of activists is small but I am fecking horrified by the amount of casual "get them out" shit I hear about the place.
It’s a lightning rod for the disaffected. You can disassociate yourself and your family and friends from all of your issues, as you perceive them. It’ll be something else in a couple of years.

Hopefully!

I did a bit of a deep dive into the modern successes of the Scandinavian countries a number of years ago; given their usual yardstick status for various socio-economic indices), and one of the underlying factors mentioned was their homogeneity. This is a contentious thing to point out nowadays but I suppose it does make a kind of intuitive sense, and the more generous and wide ranging the welfare state becomes the stricter the immigration policies become.
Denmark, Sweden & Norway are consistently top ten in the Ease of Doing Business rankings (World Bank).

I just think it’s because it’s all so new to us. Same reason I was horrified by all the casual racism (from people who should know better) when I moved home from Dublin 12 years ago. We’ve only had even a hint of diversity for one generation, two at most. So there’s a sense of “other” about anyone who isn’t a white Christian that will take another generation or two for lots of Irish people to get over. It’s depressing but it is what it is.

To a degree, but I can't see it wearing off too easily, especially around here.
