Irish Media : 'Keane to lose captaincy'

The Irish media was rife with this headline yesterday. They reckoned that the image conscience plc wanted rid of Keane and wanted the instantly recognisable Beckham as the face and leader of the club.

They tried to back this up with comments from Ferguson saying that Beckham has been a great a leader.

My questions are :

1. Have the English media run this at all ?
2. Will it happen ?
3. Do you want it to happen ?

1.Iv not heard anything.
2.Wouldn't suprise me.
3.No.

I haven't read anything on the net about it. I don't think it will happen and I don't want it to happen.

I wouldn't mind seeing Becks as the future captain but I don't want a captain replacement for Keano ... no thanks.

No disrespect to Beckham (who i think should be the next captain) but if it were to happen id expect the OT crowd to show their displeasure.
Fuchin board shouldnt be dipping their oar in

In my opinion Beckham isn't half the captain Keane is. He doesn't have that angry fire in his belly.

I agree - but I think we will see this change - note Kenyon's comments today about it "not being a black and white case" that Utd support Keane's right to publish his comments in his book. smells to me like Fergie has been told that he can only keep Keane if he keeps him under control - but that he must hand over the armband. Don't think it'll stop him bossing the team around though - Smiechel didn't ned to wear the armband to tell Bruce and Pallister to get a grip.

That's plausible, but it'll really be kinda annoying if Keano is stripped off the captaincy because of the PLC.

I cannot see Fergie taking the captaincy of Keano, Beckham as a captain compared to Keano is laughable. Keano is a leader, Beckham (quality player) is not a leader and cannot drive the team on. In fact in Keano's absence I would be more inclined to give the captaincy to someone like Rio or Gary Neville.

Rio's only been at the club 5 minutes. Gary Neville is hardly Keane's equal in leading on the pitch.

It will be a sad sad day if Keano stops being captain, but I think that though Fergie may take the captaincy away, both players and fans will know who United's captain is, armband or no.

Look for Keano to lead as he has always done.

I was talking to a Utd fan yesterday, in his mid 50's and he reckoned, and I agreed, that if the captaincy was taken off Keane then he would walk.

I believe that if Keane saw the PLC meddling to rub his nose in it then he would have no problems in leaving just like Cantona.

Really couldnt see him playing on if it were to happen.

I think he would have the support of the majority of fans too if it was a PLC decision. But i doubt its true, they might be unhappy with his behavious but i presume that even they have the sense not to go that far.

I posted this in another forum.

One of Sats papers had it ( I think the Guardian ) quoting senior sources inside Old trafford...,,

Should we do it ...NO < NO NO

Beckham isn't and will never be half the captain Keano is.

I wouldn't blame Roy for walking out if he had the armband taken away from him.

I would - There is more to playing for Utd than wearing some stupid armband. If the PLC insists for PR reasons Keane should play on. I don't believe his teamates would respect him less - all of them are in awe of his performances on the pitch - though they may be a little sick of his antics off it.

Keane's a great, great, player truly one of our best ever. If he wasn't he'd have been shipped off like Ince long ago. If they strip the captaincy he should just knuckle down and prove the shitheads wrong.

The captaincy is not some stupid armband though is it? The captain has a number of responsibilities off the pitch as well as on it so to suddenly expect Roy to just quietly fade into the background is to do an injustice to his character. The man is driven like no other and I personally couldn't imagine him taking orders (no matter how subtle they are) from anyone else in the squad. Not to mention if you read his book you'll get a sense quite quickly of how things work in his head and certain principles for him seem to be integral in his life (generally not the ones which don't condone violence though). You're right about him being one of our best ever and hence depriving him of the captaincy because it suits teenage girls who think Becks is cute really highlights what a ridiculous thing it would be if it happened.

Any of you consider that Keane doesnt want to be captain??

Firstly a captain is not there to keep people in shape, every player should be doing that to each other anyway.

A captain is there to inspire. I dont know if Keane still does. Not like Cantona did.

Beckham can be inspirational for us. We have not seen the best of him that I'm sure of.

I dont care who the captain is as long as its best for the team.

If Keano wants to relinquish the captain`s armband then that is another matter altogether. Maybe he himself wants a little more breathing space given the way he has been taken out of context and witchunted this year.

I don`t agree with those who say that Becks has no fire in his belly and is not inspirational. He IS - but in a different way from Keano. He inspires confidence when he is the England captain whereas Keano`s approach is keep everybody on their toes and lambast them if they don`t do what they should.

But I believe RoY Keane`s captaincy leadership is still relevant at Old Trafford. After all, who cares what the media think? If Roy had assaulted someone like Eric did (not that I am worried Eric got stuck into the little racist shit - it was just unfortunately so public and NOT something that should have been let go), I could understand. But all Keano has done is give some honest opinions in his book and honest interviews with selected media.

Stand by him if he doesn`t want to step down as Captain. If all the squad had Roy`s passion and desire to win what unbeatable records this club would make.

We should support both of them no matter who's the captain. I admire Keano's contribution and hope he can still be the captain. But if he really want to give the armband away, then there is no one better than Beckham to succeed it in our team.

On a Manchester Evening News poll they have a majority of people wanting Keane to step down.
Don't know much about this paper..Man City fans or Alfie Haaland voting repeatedly i presume.

The day keane stops being the united captain is the day he will be wearing a celtic shirt.

personally, i would rather someone other than Beckham became captain when keane does retire/move on. I know he's new but i can definately see O'shea being captain one day; he's got the right stuff for the job i think. Ferdinand would also do a decent job of it.

The trouble with beckham is he starts believing his own hype sometimes and has to be put in check by fergie - it happens every season, usually his form dips at the same time, a real captain would never have problems like that because his commitment would be absalute.

quote:
"personally, i would rather someone other than Beckham became captain when keane does retire/move on"

they won`t ask you.

hence the use of the word "personally".
I think we should buy Djbrill Cisse, personally.
Unfortunatley no ones asked for my opinion, am i not allowed give it? ;)

Roy Keane is the best captain in Manchester United and Ireland team. His Ireland teammates are prejudice to him but not in Old Trafford because Beckham or his other MU teammates and the fans will not loss any admiration to his leadership to win the games.
