Keane on the squad this season:

"There are only one or two players who can say they have done really well - Ruud van Nistelrooy and David Beckham. The rest of us, myself included, did not do well enough."

Cool, that's what we, or should I say, I was talking about in <a href="http://forum.redcafe.net/cgi-bin/forum/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=007046" target="_blank">this thread</a>.

I don't think names should be mentioned in this way - it's the sort of thing that can cause acrimony.

And everyone must have been wrong for criticising Beckham early in the season then, and saying he only performs well for England - and if he was doing that well, why did Fergie drop him for 8 games?

You win as a team, you lose as a team, this is the United/Fergie way. Keano should not be pointing fingers now the seasons done and dusted. I could understand if it was during the season, it would spur people on to prove him wrong. However, saying it now will not accomplish anything, or than negativity within the squad.

of course he's not a supreme judge but he's the captain, he's Roy Keane, and this means something.
I think he only said, frankly, his technical opinion. I want to hope this doesn't cause negativity to the squad.

I think he said this because he want to defend for the new comers. New comers are always the easy targets if people want to blame our failure this season on somebody. In positive view, Keano's word can somehow make Blanc and Veron feel better and let them know they have the supports from teammates. No matter what, I think the old players need and deserve a kick at their back anyway.

I see that both Alex and Keano are applying their age old tactics of convincing them that everyone is against them, and fostering the siege mentality and 'I'll prove you wrong' stance, to Blanc and Seba. Seba is even talking now like he has adopted this set of beliefs - which bodes well for next season, because it always gets the best out of players.

The hunger has been missing for quite sometime, there was a need to get things fired up. Keane's still raging at having missed the CL final, judging by the way Real played last night, we could beaten them last night.

Can't believe Keano thinks he didn't do well enough himself! What more could he have done for the team?
If there are any players his criticisms are aimed at, might it be Ryan Giggs.
Great things are always expected... but we've been let down do oftehn this season.
Still, it is encouraging Keano thinks he can play even better!

Score a few more goals.

Ole should have been named too. He didn't play every game, yet scored a bunch...

If Becks was mentioned, then Ole certainly should have been.

Becks didn't have that great a season.

I think Roy is being a tad modest,he was the best Utd player this season with Van Nistleroy a close second.Beckham had a mediocre season despite the goals.

Beckham was hitting the best form of his career so far at UTD before he was injured. He was truly starting to show that he could be considered among the world elite. His untimely injury helped to derail UTD season at the end.

RVN is without question UTD's player of the season. His first season after a career threatening injury was nothing short of astonishing. CL top scorer, the only player ever to score in 8 consecutive league games, 2nd leading goalscorer in the PL. A phenomenal goal to game ratio (I think the best in the league). 36 goals in his first season is amazing. He was always considered to have the potential at PSV. We now know we have a world superstar. What is most gratifying is his prodigous work rate. I have no doubt that had he been employed in a 4-4-2 all season he would have smashed the 40 goal barrier.

Imagine what he'll do when he really gets going!!!

But both Beckham and Ruud had bad spells. Every player in the team - more or less - had good and bad. Ruud was definitely more good than bad, and when Becks was on form he was brilliant. But his brilliance was for only about half a season. Or did Fergie drop him for 8 games for no reason?

True

True, but if you are runners up in worldfootballer of the year award you are already considered among the world elite. So the could be is a bit of nosense.

;)

Today it is quoted Keano said we should not blame the new boys and should only judge them after 2 or 3 years.

Which has proved that his quote yesterday was mainly because he want to remove the pressure and abuses on the new players by declaring the old boys and himself should take the blame for our failure in this season.

Well if I was Ole or Butt, I'd be pissed off.

Of what? Champagne? Milk stout?

His season wasn't a great success!

Well he was expected to be sold in the summer, along with Ole and Nicky, but there was a period of time when our season got back on track when he was in the first-team and playing well. He can certainly not be accused of not trying hard enough. He may not have made as big an impression on the season as Ole and Butt, but he has played his part.

Rumours claimed he (Phil) was fed up being a reserve. Middlesboro (and Steve McClaren) were said to be interested.

I was referring to the Ole bit.

My apologies. When Ruud came some (thankfully most United fans had more sense and knew it would never happen) thought Ole would be the one to go, maybe to Spurs.

Oh right. I thought you meant this summer.
