One of the most frightening moments I've ever witnessed in North American sports. Artest fouled Wallace (and not as harsh as some thought) and Wallace pushed Artest in the face leading to players gathering around, but peace was maintained. That is until, a drink was thrown at Artest hitting him in the face. And Artest went into the crowd, inciting a near riot.

was gonna start a thread on this..never seen anything like it before. didn't know why big ben reacted the way he did..maybe the foul was a bit hard but you get that most of the time..

fans were really stupid..even when the players were walking towards the tunnel, drinks and popcorn and what-not were raining down on them

Wallace's brother died last week...the foul was with the game out of reach and was totally uncalled for. Wallace is one of the better people in the league and generally doesn't rise to bait.

I don't expect we'll be seeing Artest anymore...maybe gone for the season.

It's been done before. Cantona kung-fu kicked that cnut of a Palace fan years ago...Boston Bruins @ MSG in the NHL...Dodgers bullpen in Chicago. It's hardly explosive. But, ESPN was broadcasting the game and has good tape of it...so, it's the biggest story ever...until the College Football starts in a couple of hours. <Yawn.>

And as for things being thrown and unruly fans...I guess they've never been to a CONCACAF WC qualifier anywhere outside of the US. Or @ the LA Coliseum. <Double Yawn.>

:nono: Wallace was way out of line. No matter how hard the foul was, which it wasn't and Wallace has been fouled much harder, he had no reason to react the way he did. He'll get a suspension of 3-5 games, Artest will get 10-20 games, Jackson will get 5-10 games, and a handful of other players will get 1-5 games each. And many will be fined and I expect the Pistons organization to receive a hefty fine as well.

Wallace was out of line. The fans were out of line and Artest is a nutcase. I just wish someone would have hit Artest in the head with one of those metal chairs. He needs someone to knock some sense into him.

hhmmmm..just read somewhere that artest went after a guy in a black shirt who had a drink with him..apparently it was a white shirt guy who threw the drink

feck off...it IS the whole country.

Here: NBA Fight

Wallace overreacted and should get a 6-10 game ban
Artest should 10-15 games for going into the stands
O'Neal 6-10 games, although he shouldn't be punished for decking the idiot fans who were on the floor.
Jackson 10-15 games for going into the stands

Local police need to id all the fans involved in the brawl and/or were throwing shit and arrest and fine them too.

feck yeah thats the Shit ! fecken loving it ! more of that please ! Pistons caused it all. The Fans took it further also. Dont blame indiana for acting that way. Such shit to the pistons fan on the court who got a smack in the head. Loved it.

I think we should be looking at jail-time here.

Piston player started it.
Piston Fans took it further and caused more chaos.
There should be proper and tighter security around the court.

IMO Indiana shouldnt be the only ones to cop a heavy punishment. none of this would of gone overboard if the fans didnt act on the situation and if there were proper security to control it. Not saying Indiana shouldnt be punished but your all saying the players should get 10-20 games ban...why ? because they had people on the court throwing objects and fists in their faces and groups of fans running onto the court to fight them and even jump on them ? I would of done the same if i were an Indiana player. feck all this professionalism...when you have bunch of cnuts in your face and throwing things at you wanting to hurt you your not gonna put your hands on your head and accept it.

At least now we know why you're not a professional player. ;)

Being professional = Keeping your cool.

I understand that. An example is Ruud against Arsenal in the Old Trafford show down last season. He could of retaliated but he didnt it. He copped it from the Arse players and walked off. But in this case its different. The fans got involved...to the extent where they even came onto the court to strike the Indiana players. Again IMO If i were in that situation i would of "defended" (key word) myself. If your walking off the court and everyone is throwing drinks and food at you...what you going to do ? Thats a kick in the teeth for an athlete. They have "professional" status all over them yet they do not get the respect. All athletes at times can go overboard on the court/field etc but its up to the officials and players themselves to resolve it and many times it gets sorted...in this case the fans were involved so i see no reason why the Indiana players shouldnt defend themselves and fight back. Expecially when they were surrounded with fans wanting to hit them. They were protecting one another the Indiana players. Thats why it looked like they caused it all. You could say the Indiana players wanted to continue to fight and may have gone overboard but in that situation a persons anger gets the best of them. Some can control it, others have too big of an ego to simply let some fat weak yank get the best of them and allow them to leave thinking they won the battle.

The First people who i would punish would be Ben Wallace and the Piston fans for starting and continuing the fight. Then i would punish the certain Indiana fans for going into the crowd (i would of done same...would of been worth it too). The security at the Basketball match must be questioned. I went to the ESPN website and saw some clips of people talking about the game. One guy said he knew the security there and says his two year old could put some of them in a headlock...that obviously says alot. Bunch of clueless weak yanks wearing jackets 10 times the size of their bodies saying "security"...Also Wallace claims he didnt start it ... what a wanker.

Another example is Maradona for Barcelona when the crowd came onto the pitch and he was fighting for his life. You just dont give a shit about professionalism in those situations.

Unleash the Fury !

Can i actually save it?

Yeah, right click the link and say "Save Target" and it should be yours ;)

artest - done for the year (72 games)
jackson 30
oneal 25
big ben 6

9 players suspended for a total of 143 games

Brillaint idea Grinner.

big ben ... is that ben Wallace ? if so ... wasnt he the one who started it by pushing the indiana player in the face with two hands and then continueing to cause trouble ... and yet he only gets 6 games ?

Thats alittle harsh on Artest ... he got hit in the face with a bottle and then had pistons fans surrounding him wanting to attack him ... bloody joke. He shouldnt have to be subject to such treatment. Ok he probably shouldnt of jumped into the crowd but before he did so he got pushed in the face pretty hard by a pistons player ... whilst he was lying on the table he was probably trying to calm himself down while the officials were breaking it up ... the cooling off period obviously was interupted by a bottle in the face ... so really you cant blame him for going nuts. He is human after all.

they're looking at it this way..big ben reacted to the foul (he started it) but this happens all the time in the league..

what they're trying to stop altogether is players decking fans whether they deserve it or not

lucky for that stupid detroit fan who came onto the court..o'neal slipped just as he was throwing a haymaker at him..if he didn't slip..that fan can kiss his head goodbye

I thought he still got him good even when he slipped/dived out at him.

You sure he slipped ? I thought he just dived at him...kinda launched himself.

Just had another look at it. He punched him first then he slipped.

can't be bothered to look at it again..watched it on sportscentre..i thought he slipped before he punched him

I think that the Commissioner got the suspensions pretty much right. Wallace might have got more than he deserved. His conduct ends with Artest. Artest got extra because he has a history of bad conduct. The first fan that Artest went after wasn't the one who threw the bottle - the bottle thrower was the guy in the hat pulling on Artest from behind.

I was watching the game when it happened. There were a lot of little kids in the stands crying. The Pacers have to learn to let security take care of it if somebody throws a drink on them.

Here's a good summary of the whole thing: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/cowbell/041122

Bill Simmons has some of the best writing on the NBA. From that article:

5. If you watch the game -- which has already earned coveted "Save until I delete" status on my TiVo, by the way -- two plays led to Artest's hard foul. With 6:43 remaining, Rip Hamilton threw a cheapshot elbow into Jamaal Tinsley's back after a defensive rebound (they called a foul as the Pacers bench erupted). That could have been a flagrant since it looked like Hamilton went out of his way to belt him. And with 1:25 remaining, down by 11 points, Wallace knocked Artest into the basket support while blocking his layup -- from the camera angle, you can't tell if it's a foul or not. So if you're playing the "Why was Artest fouling Wallace with such a big lead?" card, the play wasn't much different than Wallace's block. He just got more of a piece of him.

It puts it in a little perspective.

I think Artest got 20 too many games. I think Wallace should've gotten more. Jackson should've gotten more. I think O'Neal should've gotten 1 game at most, since the only idiot he decked was the morons on the court.

That's perhaps the worst brawl I've ever seen in any sports.

Only saw this last night whilst watching the Pacers-Celtics game. Quite frightening really, but it was destined to happen. Basketball is one of the few sports where fans still have close contact with the players and officials.

I also subscribe to the conspiracy theory that Artest constructed all this in order to go and promote his band/record label.

The NBA should come down even heavier on Artest. I was watching last week, and he was at the center of contraversy as he'd left the team without permission because he felt he had a right to go and promote his record label/band. A few days later, this happens and he is suspended. It's not the first time he's caused trouble either.
