Trying to copy the English Premier League. I think this will be quite interesting.

Dhoni was the most expensive, followed by Symonds.
No-one originally bidded for Glenn Mcgrath.
Should be interesting, but it is absolute madness.

It's a farce. It's like some rich folks playing some online multiplayer cricket manager game in real life.

'Delhi Daredevils'

feck off

So this IPL is different from the that other thing owned by ZeeTV, right? And the players playing in the Zee thing have basically been retired from international cricket? And why isn't Bond there in that list? I thought he was having trouble with the NZ board because he wanted to play in this tournament. This is all rather confusing.

Ok I get it. That's the Indian Cricket League and this is the Indian Premier League.

Should be fun watching Sachin open with Jayasurya and Gilchrist bat with Gibbs.

What's the format? ODIs or Twenty20s?

Nah

That is ICL. Bond is in it that one so are the likes of Lara, Cairns, Aaloo etc.

IPL is BCCI's baby, supported by ICC and all other boards. Basically they are trying to form cricket version of EPL.

Twenthy20thy

Hehe, Delhi daredevils

Bombay better not get a shit name. Anyway I think it'll be fun. Better than seeing India vs Australia ODI # 21.

Wtf, Shahrukh and Preity Zinta own sport teams now?

So, are we supposed to support Delhi or what? This question is directed at crappy, donado (hair like shahrukh's), amol and others from Delhi.

I think Hyderabad has the strongest team.

Yeah, the owner thing is old news.

I will 'support' Delhi I guess. Though don't think I will be watching this. May be odd one if I have nothing to do.

Hyderabad does seem to have the strongest team on paper but my early tip is Mohali.

They have Lee and Pathan. Their batting probably the most solid with guys who are in their prime- Yuvi, Sarwan, Sangakara and Jayawardena.

Adam Gilchrist (US$700,000), Andrew Symonds (US$1.35 million), Herschelle Gibbs (US$575,000), Shahid Afridi (US$675,000), Scott Styris (US$175,000), VVS Laxman (US$375,000)

That's some power hitting line up.

Chennai
MS Dhoni (US$1.5 million), Muttiah Muralitharan (US$600,000), Matthew Hayden (US$375,000), Jacob Oram (US$675,000), Stephen Fleming (US$350,000), Parthiv Patel (US$325,000), Joginder Sharma (US$225,000), Albie Morkel (US$675,000), Suresh Raina (US$650,000), Makhaya Ntini (US$200,000), Michael Hussey (US$350,000)

They look like they have the best balance in their team.

Kolkata
Sourav Ganguly (capt), Shoaib Akhtar (US$425,000), Ricky Ponting (US$400,000), Brendon McCullum (US$700,000), Chris Gayle (US$800,000), Ajit Agarkar (US$330,000), David Hussey (US$675,000), Ishant Sharma (US$950,000), Murali Kartik (US$425,000), Umar Gul (US$150,000), Tatenda Taibu (US$125,000)

Again they look like they have a decent balance of players.

Delhi
Virender Sehwag (capt), Daniel Vettori (US$625,000), Shoaib Malik (US$500,000), Mohammad Asif (US$650,000), AB de Villiers (US$300,000), Dinesh Karthik (US$525,000), Farveez Maharoof (US$225,000), Tillakaratne Dilshan (US$250,000), Manoj Tiwary (US$675,000), Gautam Gambhir (US$725,000), Glenn McGrath (US$350,000)

These lot probably have the best bowling line-up - crucial in Twenty20 I think.

Hyderabad
Adam Gilchrist (US$700,000), Andrew Symonds (US$1.35 million), Herschelle Gibbs (US$575,000), Shahid Afridi (US$675,000), Scott Styris (US$175,000), VVS Laxman (US$375,000), Rohit Sharma (US$750,000), Chamara Silva (US$100,000), RP Singh (US$875,000), Chaminda Vaas (US$200,000), Nuwan Zoysa (US$110,000)

Some bowlers are going to get absolutely slaughtered by this lot.

Good to see the cricketers getting some good money, too bad they have to go to India to get it

was a serious question mate. don't know much about the other area's of india. Only lived in madras for a couple years when I 5-6. Which team do you also think will have the most hoolie element? Just curious.

peronally i think this premier league will do extremely well monetarily and in 10 years you'll see a majority of the inform class-a international cricketers play. Does madras have their kits out yet?

This is the first time that such a league being introduced there. I can't see many fans traveling for away games. You have to understand that this is very different from the premiership. The teams are filled big name players to begin with. The entire setup is catered towards the television audiences not grassroot support (which at the moment doesn't exist).

I think that if the league becomes a permanent fixture eventually a fanbase will form. But all that's in the future.

What is the 'icon' in to receive, is it 15% more than anyone on their club or is it 15% more than the highest paid non - Icon in the league

Thing I don't understand is...why're they pumping billions of dollars in an utterly pointless form of the game?Madness is right.

Twenty20, Shahrukhkhan, Zinta....reason enough never to watch cricket again.

And travelling away support

Don't think this particular experiment is going to succeed - too much amateurishness and haste... but long term, I have a feeling the Indian domestic league is going to be the dominant competition in world cricket. There's just too much money and thirst for cricket there.

Its amusing to watch whats happening though. Don't get why the BCCI couldn't just model their league on a one thats actually working and not build it up like some silly fantasy league. Choose the Premier League or the NBA or something of the sort and follow their model as closely as possible rather than just make up the rules as they go along. For example, the concept of players playing for a different team each season is a guaranteed turn-off for spectators.

in India

The Chennai team is called the Superkings.

Can't believe some of these prices. Dhoni cost more than Gilchrist and Ponting.

Its a silly circus but I don't why anyone would be surprised that Dhoni cost more thant Gilchrist and Ponting. Who will more people come to see? Who'll sell more shirts?

I also don't get the over the top pontificating about the process and how immoral and un-cricketlike it is. Look at Donado's post above. It goes on in every sport. Don't see why cricket should be an exception.

Its a real shame that nobody bid for mcgrath initially and Dhoni is worth that much.

mcgrath has been off the scene for a year or may be 2.
He is quite old as well (over 35). So biiders lost confidence in him!!

Dhoni is young built for twenty20 and a hero in india.!!!

The idiots doing this to the sport think like you too.Don't have kids, eh?

Am I the only one who thinks ICC have shot themselves on the foot with this one?

If India public takes a liking to the IPL shit and it gets the viewing numbers anywhere close to Indian international matches, that would give BCCI very big boost. Which further down the line could eventually lead to a football like situation. I mean IPL could offer three times the money Aussies get from their contract in Australia, and sign them full time. If it keeps brining the moolah, BCCI would probably risk expulsion from ICC.

There's an ad for Hyderabadi biryani on this page that's making me really hungry.

I bet Donado will go for all the Delhi games and root for his city.
