India fans here, what do you think of this political stance? For background: basically the likes of Afridi, Nazir and Tanveer all had their visas granted, etc, then no team bid for a single Pakistani player. No interest whatsoever.

Being Pakistani I don't personally care as I've never been a fan of IPL. If anything this rebuttal may actually make the likes of Afridi, etc, angry enough to play well all year to prove the IPL teams wrong. All this works in Pakistan cricket's favour IMO specially with the T20 and 50 over world cups coming up.

However, what do you guys think is happening behind the scenes? Do you think the IPL teams have been warned of a worsening political situation between the countries? Let's hope not.

IMO, it's the only realistic reason why there was no interest in the Pakistani players, I find it hard to believe that a player like Afridi who is among the most powerful hitters in the world and also a T20 match winner doesn't get a party interested. I think the "External" factors have played a part in this development, won't be surprised if "Shiv Sena" had threatened the team owners of dire consequences if they bought a Pakistani player.

Think that's pretty much it. See no other reason why the Pakistani players weren't selected. Chennai splashed 50k on Perrera. Could've gotten Gul/Afridi/Nazir/and other players who're like 10x good for about that much money. They chose not to, just like the other franchises.

Considering the way he played against India in recent times, I think Super Kings have got a bargain

'recent times' is about 2 matches. Sure he's a good middle-order hitter, but when you have a team that can have only 4 foreigners, you want 4 outstanding players. He is good, maybe more than good, but you don't waste a foreign slot on him. Chennai already have Hayden, Hussey, Morkel, Ntini, Muralitharan and now Kemp. And the middle order's strong enough as it is with Raina, Dhoni, Badrinath. Think he was a pointless signing.

Wrong.

They did not have their visas yet. They just had the permission from Pak Govt to play this time. Visas would have been granted by the Indian one. There was no guarantee they would have been either since you can never rule out the possibility of relations taking a bad turn due to some incident before IPL begin. Even though quality of these players can not be questioned, it would have been an unnecessary risk for franchises to buy any Pak player until it is cent percent clear that there would be obstruction in them participating.

And this is not the first time something like this has occured. I recall a certain Turkish player being released by Villa after what happened in a volatile football match between Turkey and England. Same with a Korean player at Italian club I think after WC 2002. This is about things much bigger than that.

The chances of a pakistani player not being allowed to play in India for the IPL because of political reasons or a Terror strike are quite high so no one wanted to take the risk i guess.
Politicians in pakistan are making it into a big deal and claiming it to be an insult. The frachisee's just played it safe; thats about it..

I can't understand the uproar in Pakistan either. If anything it safeguards our players from injuries and makes them more determined to win at international level. Double bonus. If anything its to the detriment of the IPL, specially if Afridi and the likes shine elsewhere (he's already started shining against Aus).

PCB has lodged an official complaint with ICC, there is no way that ICC could do anything in this matter. The whole reaction in Pakistan has been amazingly OTT

It was still very bad PR by IPL. They ought to have come out clean on exclusion of Pak players before the auction citing tense relations between two countries. They would have gotten some heat then but not on this level.

Agreed. They should haven't included Pakistani players in the auction, the Pakistani players rightfully are showing their anger but still think that Pakistani Govt is over-reacting
