The thing that initially struck me about tonight's game was the pace in which United started. There wasn't 10 minutes on the clock and United had threated the Olympiakos goal about 3 times. Their passing was sharp, and each player seemed to know what to do with the ball.
I was pleasantly surprised at Veron's start, and as it continued throughout the game (especially after that glorious goal) until the end; when he made that razor sharp pass to set up the 4th goal. It does my heart good because he's my favourite United player, and he finally showed the ability that he has. He didn't just do it for a period of 20 minutes, he showed it for 92 minutes.
People are saying that Giggsy is man of the match tonight. To me that's just poppycock, and is a cheap perception because he happened to score two goals (one of which was a deflextion). Giggs played well, but in context Juan Sebastian Veron takes the Man of the Match. He scored a top drawer goal, he set up a goal with an exquisite pass, he played at LEAST 8 KILLER passes tonight, gave the ball away about 4 times, and most of all he lasted consistantly for 93 minutes. Now if that is not Man of the Match quality I don't know what is. If Veron was not man of the match, then Scholes takes it.
I was very pleased to see how Scholes performed in that striker role. I was sceptical going into the game, but after the 1st ten minutes Scholes showed us why he is one of the cleverest attacking players in the game. It was a delight to see his change in direction, and his ability to get in front of his man. Fair play Pauley.
On a whole it is an easy option to say that Olympiakos are a "weak" side, but like someone else said on this site, we didn't "allow" them to play the way they wanted to. They put 6 past Leverkusen for feck sakes.
True to say that Veron played so well because he was given lots of room, but how Veron ups his game from here on in is something we'll all have to wait and see. Needless to say the media will have built him up BIG TIME by tomorrow morning, but ever ready to knock him down based on his next 3 performances. Lets hope and pray Veron puts in performances against Arsenal & Liverpool like he did tonight. It's up to no-one else but him.
Great Game, thoroughly enjoyed. Keep up the good work lads !
