do you reckon you have enough cover?

Bloody hell, it's livelier on the football forum than it is here.

Can't believe Ferguson will be satisfied with the current squad. When you look at Liverpool (four strikers (Owen, Diouf, Heskey, Litmanen) they have many more options going forward. They've also got plenty of depth in midfield. Arsenal have options galore up front (Henry, Bergkamp, Jeffers, Kanu, Wiltord) and at least three quality central defenders (Cygan, Keown, Campbell). Both sides are well covered for 'utility' players aswell. Arsenal have Ljungberg, Edu, Parlour, Liverpool have Murphy, Berger, Smicer, Barmby.
United are OK on midfield, but you do worry if something happens to Ruud. Then we go into games with no option other than Ole and Forlan. There's no point playing Giggs up front unless there is someone to come in on the left of suitable quality.
If Yorke goes I fully expected United to move for someone like Gudjohnsen at Chelsea, or perhaps Duff. But Kenyon's comments will have Arsenal and Liverpool licking their lips in anticipation of the new season. In reality, United are worse off for strength in depth than they were last season and that can't be a good thing.
Hell. even Leeds United have greater strangth in depth and we've just taken their best player from them! Up front they have Viduka, Bridges, Fowler, Keane and Kewell and still three solid defenders in Woodgate, Radebe and Matteo. And, according to Risdale, are still planning to bring in three or four players!
I expect Ferguson will have a word or two in Kenyons ear in the next few days. He knows the strength in depth isn't quite there yet - and should someone like Gudjohnsen become available, United would be fools to turn down the opportunity of bringing him to Old Trafford.

All is talk of options that other teams have is a bit strange in my eyes. Ok, we need cover, but we basically played last season with just two (occasionally 3) and we still hammered in far more goals than anyone else. Losing RVN would be a big blow even if we had 10 strikers in the squad.

Surely we could do with someone who has pace (like Owen or Henry) or guile (like Litmanen of Bergkamp)?

Now you're talking serious money.

We could always show a little interest in them, and let the media do the rest ;)

I still think we should get Duff instead of an out and out stiker, even if it requires a swap of Yorke and Fortune + cash.

It would give us far more options than a striker as he could play on th right, left, and up front. Also the cover he would give on the left for Giggs could allow Giggs to play up front. Far more flexibility if and when required.

Not saying we should go for any of the four mentioned, there must be some younger emerging players out there - perhaps that's where Queiroz comes in? Who had heard of Anelka before Arsenal signed him?

If Yorke leaves we need a creative forward to play behind either Ole or RVN. Having spent 30M I doubt we'll buy someone expensive like Gudjunson or Duff this season. Don't know who? Maybe a stop gap like Di Canio or even Rivaldo.

Another problem is if Yorke don't leave. I doubt Fergie will ever swallow his pride and play him.

If Dwight leaves, IMO we should bring in Gudjohnson cos he's still young and he does score a fair few goals. Read in the news that Chelsea may sell him for 10mil and i think at that price, united must buy him.

Just heard on the grapevine that the 1st offer of £15m will get Gudjohnsen. Dont think he's quite worth that yet but he certainly has the potential.

If Ruud would get injured we would be fecked up, or Forlan should hit 20 odd in.

Giggs would play with Ole in such a situation, with Verón on the left and Scholes in the middle probably. Or Scholes on the left and Verón in the middle. One or the other.

I think the best solution would be to play Scholes as a striker. He has played in that position in the 96/97 season and did pretty well if I remember correctly. That would solve the problem with midfield being over-crowded. He could always be an option in both positions if required. This also plays to his strenghts as attacker and reduces his need to defend too much. IMO if we dont get anyone else this would be a better option than playing giggs as a striker. Just my 2 cents.
