If Beckham goes... What would be your team?

for the 40m, and we consider that we already had around 20m anyway, we then have 60m to spend. I always brought up the team that was sensible within budget, but if we had that type of cash, what team would you like for next season?

Here is mine:

-------------------- Ricardo ---------------------

--- GNev ----- Rio -------- Keane ----- O'Shea ---

-------------------- Verón -----------------------

-- Joaquin ---- Baraja ----- Scholes ---- Giggs --

---------------------- RVN -----------------------

And the 4-4-2, just to please Livvie of course ;)

-------------------- Ricardo ---------------------

--- GNev ----- Rio -------- Keane ----- O'Shea ---

-- Joaquin ---- Baraja ------ Verón ---- Giggs --

------------- RVN ----------- Solskjaer ----------

The question then is what to do with the extra 20m? Well, buy Denilson, and buy a decent fullback.

That would be a great team, but with Baraja maybe playing the more defensive role. Use the rest of the cash to get Robinson.

Could be a good idea, and the rest, I reckon that he would only cost 8m

I loved the way JSV got stuck in the other night, he's really with us now. Especially when you think that he had not played for so long. If he was really match fit!

My team would be:

--------------------Robinson---------------------

Neville------Ferdinand----Silvestre--------O'Shea

--------Scholes-------Baraja----------Veron------

----Solskjaer------Van Nistelrooy-------Giggs---

The ability of Neville and O'Shea reduces our need for real wingers IMO but this system would allow Ole and Giggs to move out wide anyway if need be. Unfortunately I think Keano's injuries are affecting his performances to the point where I feel a replacement is becoming a real need. Nicky provides adequate cover, but simply doesn't cut it at the highest level. I also think we should but Kewell. Although I haven't included him in the team above, i'm sure he'd get to play more than enough games a season whether they be in midfield or up front. A new full back would be useful but other than that I think we're fine. Also if more men are needed in midfield one of the front 3 can either move back into a proper midfield position or be swapped with Phil or Nicky.

He's got the bit between his teeth, and I think that was the only think he's been really lacking since he joined us. He's proving to be a fantastic player for us and will continue to get better.

I see where you are coming from there JSV, a 4-3-3.

It's adventurous, but also has decent defence. I'd still put Keane instead of Silvestre though. I think that we need a leader at the back.

Right, so out with Beckham then?

You are not splashing the cash here JSV? ;)

It is adventurous, but that's the team that has proved to be so devastatingly effective for us recently apart from Veron for Nicky. We have to consider it, especially for the league where we've proved the gung ho approach works as opposed to the slow passing European game.

for the remaining money we can opt for Lopez/Van der Vaart and Escude.Any opinions on Camoranesi and Solari?

Baraja, Kewell, Robinson and a decent fullback would cost a fair bit Weastie. The rest can just go nicely into the kitty where we can see it and snigger about how we ripped off Real. ;)

Would Kewell be happy sitting on that bench though?

I doubt he'd be sitting on the bench very much. When Giggs is off form he can play, when ruud/ole/giggs/scholes/veron are injured he can play. The opportunities will arise for him, I have no doubt about it.

I agree with you. But is he the type that could take it?

All of this Giggs thing just goes to show how much the press talk about players being off form was because of burn-out and tiredness because of the world cup doesn't it? This is how they seem to explain the early form of Scholes and Beckham, yet Giggs didn't play the world cup. Maybe it would have been better if he did.

Anyway, I hope he has a blistering coming season, Kewell or no Kewell, but I agree, for him to do so, he really needs some competition.

I also think we should really consider giving Quinton a decent run in the team in the defensive midfield role. He's impressed when hes played there this season.

---------------Barthez-----------------

---Neville----Rio----Keano----O'Shea---

--Quaresma---Scholes---Veron---Kewell--

-----------Cisse--------Ruud-----------

Giggsy will be gone next year in my view. So Kewell comes in to replace him, with Quaresma replacing Becks. Then Cisse to partner Ruud.

The thing I'm not sure about is who would take on Keano's role in the midfield. Vieira would obviously be perfect for the job, but would Arsenal sell him to us even if we offered a shitload? Just quickly doing the maths in my head, selling Becks and Giggs and buying Cisse, Kewell and Quaresma would leave us around 10-20 million pounds to add to the 20 million that we already supposedly have (according to the first post here). So would the Arse be willing to sell him for around 35 million? If so, then Vieira would fit into the midfield and Kewell, Quaresma, Veron, Scholes and Cisse would take turns being on the bench.

Where is Rommedahl?

-----------------Barthez---------------
---O'Shea---Rio----Silvestre---Escude--

--Joaquin -------Scholes-------Kewell--
------------------RVN -----------------

Becks will not leave. But he will be used in the middle. Out with Neville's, Butt, Giggs and Keano. They all have lost the movement.

Beckham on the left hand side of the midfield???
I thought you were idiots when you thought about buying Rommedahl, but this?

I'm leaning towards 4-3-3-

----------------Robinson----------------

--Neville---Ferdinand---Brown---O'Shea--

--Quaresma----Keane----Scholes---Duff---

---------------RVN------Kewell----------

---------------------Recber----------------------
(Bosman)

G Neville------Ferdinand--------Keane------O'Shea

--------------------Baraja---------------------
(15 Million)

Quaresma ------Scholes--------Amir---------Giggs
(10 million) (20 Million)

---------------------Nistelrooy------------------

Leaving 15 million to spend

--------------------Carroll----------------------

P Neville------Brown--------Silvestre------Escude
(5 Million)

Solskjear-------Butt----------Veron------Fortune

-------------Forlan------------Adriano-----------
(10 Million)

And, Steele, Thierney, Stewart, Eagles, Fletcher, Timm, Nardellio and Richardson all pushng for places as well... giving a first team squad of 30 players

---------------------Peter Chech-----------------
(7 million)

G Neville------Ferdinand--------Keane------O'Shea

----------------Baraja--------------------------- (15 Million)

Quaresma -------------Scholes/Veron---------Giggs
(10 million)
------------------------------Robhino------------
(10 million)
--------------------Nistelrooy-------------------

What about Fletcher?

Have you forgot the United tradition?

Fletcher needs a a few years yet to put on some weight, and Scholes is in front of him which is a hard task.

I think that Camoranesi and Solari would be great additions to our team!!... they both are creative, skilful players... and not too expensive (i guess)... and I don't know how is Camoranesi as a person, but Solari won't have any adaptation problems in England...

Seing as Beckham ain't leavin...

You'll have to put up with this type of thread for about the next 4 months now. A Brazilian here, a spaniard there and none of whom will play for us of course.

------------Barthez----------------
O`Shea----Rio---Keane------Silvestre
-------Veron---Makelele----------
Quaresma--Scholes/Ronaldinho---Giggs
---------------RuuD-----------------

I also don't think Becks will go, nor Giggs though he would be the more likely.

-------------Cech/Robinson
O'Shea---Rio----Silvestre---Escude
----------------Keano/Butt
Becks------Scholes/Veron----Giggs
---------------Ronaldinho
--------------------RVN

Quaresma to play RW and LW as injuries and form require.
Fletcher and esp.Timm to feature.

Or this for a fantasy attacking side

-------------Cech/Robinson
O'Shea----Rio----Keano---Silvestre
--------------Scholes/Veron
Becks-----------------------------Giggs
---------------Ronaldinho
-------------------Cisse
--------------------RVN

Quaresma available when Giggs and Becks need a rest or some competition.
Escude to bolster the defence.
Cisse could cover RVN because if he went down we wouldn't have a forward to play that role effectively(we've been lucky he's been so fit this season).

If Giggs left:

-------------Cech/Robinson
O'Shea----Rio----Silvestre---Escude
----------------Keano/Butt
Becks---Scholes/Veron-------Kewell
---------------Ronaldinho
--------------------RVN

Quaresma again. ;)
Maybe Cisse too, depending on the monies available after the Giggs and Kewell fee.

IF Becks went:

-------------Cech/Robinson
O'Shea----Rio----Silvestre--Escude
----------------Keano/Butt
Joaquin---Scholes/Veron-----Giggs
---------------Ronaldinho
--------------------RVN

Quaresma for cover(Giggs mostly)
We could then afford Cisse also.

Oh come on did you watch the Real Madrid match the other night? Zidane ran circles around Keane. I think Real Madrid should be our benchmark, and they showed our weaknesses.

First GK: Barthez was at fault for two of the goals. Unacceptable for that level. They were schoolboy errors. In the first he wasn't even guarding the first post and the second the guy was 10 metres off his line! Ive always tried to give Barthez the benefit of the doubt, but he must go. Ricardo is not good enough to play for Man Utd on a regular basis. I think the Real Madrid match was the tale of two goalies. One of them saved his team the other condemned his team to watching the final from the stands.

Defence: It showed to be seriously lacking in both matches. I think Keane will go. HE's not going to be able to compete on the level of Zidane and Vieira next season. Putting him in defence is not a good option. I think we should base the defence around Rio and OShea. Everyone says Brown is going to be the best defender in England when he gets older.......well what is he now 22? I like Silvestre but having both him and Brown in defence, its just not good enough. They arent good enough to stop Raul, Ronaldo and co.

I see some of you just don't learn. Do you see Real Madrid buying players like Kewell? Hes a good player but is he the best? no. Good is not good enough for Man Utd anymore. Kewell would be no better than Giggs so it would be a redundant buy. We have to look at the BEST, something Real Madrid learned a few seasons ago. They are going to improve their Midfield and defence in the summer with the best players in the world. they already have a dream team, imagine it at the end of the summer. if we wanna compete we also have to have a dream team.
