Leeds boss David O'Leary has told Sky Sports News that the last club he would sell defender Rio Ferdinand to is Manchester United.

O'Leary insisted England's World Cup star remains an integral part of his plans despite reports that he could be leaving Elland Road in a £30m deal.

"I bought Rio Ferdinand for £18m when people said it was a lot of money and I want to keep him. I particularly don't want to sell him to Manchester United," O'Leary said.

"They are a great club and we are trying to build a team here, not make them even greater by selling them probably one of the best defenders in the world.

"I'm trying to build a team for the fans and put a squad together for the future of this football club and like any hopefully good manager, you don't want to lose your good players because that makes your job even harder."

Manchester United chairman Martin Edwards has already publicly stated that the player is one they would be interested in landing.

"There's no secret that Rio Ferdinand is a great player and would certainly improve our squad," Edwards said. But the player himself has intimated he wishes to stay at the club.

"I am absolutely delighted he has said he wants to stay. I don't want him to go. He is a tremendous player and one of my best players and I want to keep him," O'Leary told Sky Sports.
"The fans love him, I love him."

However, the Leeds boss is aware that the ultimate decision may be taken out of his hands as money talks - especially when there are club directors with books to balance.

"At the end of the day I work for a plc. I have been supported with a lot of money but the money I have spent has gone in good areas," O'Leary added.

When Leeds went in for Rio, ol' Harry was saying the same stuff, and their fans were saying the same stuff, and Rio was saying the same stuff.

This is again another huge step up, everything is the same.

Lets face it, Rio doesnt have to make a choice, Man Utd wins everytime. If they let him go, he will come. Will they have the balls to turn down £30m? I dont even know if WE'D turn down £30m for one of our top players.

Lets face this too, O'Leary loves Man Utd - its the biggest managerial turn on, its a great club, one of the greatest, if we wanted him, he'd be here in a flash.

We dont have a place in his heart, but I bet he was hoping and wishing he'd be Fergie's replacement.

I think everyone knows a £30m bid would go straight to the PLC. But DOL will have his say. Whether they pay attention is another matter.

Well exactly as he himself admitted, he works for the plc, which at the end of the day will make the decision on rio, he was simply stating his point of view and the guy is hardly going to come out and say - Yes i want to sell rio aka my best player, captain etc.

Rio will be a united player within the next two weeks, i would imagine! :D

It's taken a long time for him to say this. Trying to raise the price perhaps?

And Rio still will be sold.

Rio quote just in from Soccernet:

'It's a massive shock and I'm disappointed to see this happen,' he told Sky Sport News. 'He's been with the club through good and bad. He paid a lot of money to sign me [£18m in November 2000] and he's been brilliant for me, first-class.'

He was right <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />
