He brings so much to our defence with his organizational skills. I blame the loss of him and not Beckham which was a telling factor in our failings toward the end of the season.

Agreed..!! :D
Especially against Bayer in the return leg we lacked the sense of cohesion and organisation throughout our defence. Gaz would have made a big difference.
As for next season, I think whether Gaz will play in the middle will depend of who and how many defenders we sign. Pairing him with Thuram would be brilliant IMO, as we would have a great tackler along with a great game-reader/organiser.

Err...actually, I wouldn't mind pairing him with Blanc still. I remember that when both of them were in the centre, our defence was actually quite good. The Brown-Blanc pairing on the other hand was an abject failure. One non-English speaking and the other not being inclined to speak. When there is no communication, stupid mistakes happen.

Care to elaborate?

Marcus, you are absolutely spot on about old Nev. Our change in form this season was all based around Gaz moving into the centre. He's a determined disciplined organisor who was sadly missed in the latter stages of the season. In fact, if you think about it, Gaz played loads of games at centre half over the last three years...Stam missed a lot of games during 2000 and 2001 and we still managed to cruise to league.....explain that!

As for King I get the distinct impression that he is another one of the anti-Neville brigade. Crazy, probably wants us to go off an buy Lizarazu or Nesta or some other fancy Dan.

King obviously doesn't really watch football, or if he does he appears not to understand it. I guess King is slagging off the Nevster because he's not in his United dreamteam on his Playstation or something.
Gary Neville is a red, was badly missed late on this year and anyone who's really watched United over the last three years would have to agree with that.

G. Neville is in my dream team in fact, I use him as target practise during training sessions.

Sorry King, just having a go at a fellow country man. The Nevster gets an inordinate amount stick I reckon. So you ever listen to that phone in on Today FM.? Every second Man Utd fan ringing in is having a pop at Gazza. The man's a legend and we should all remember that.
The trick on the old Playstation is too boost his speed rating

Gaz is a short term fix...if he is so fecking brilliant as a CB like you ppl said it, Don't you think Fergie would have continued to use him there?
He's good enough where he is now.

I think you got it partially right, your post...
"Gaz is short" and that's why Fergie wants him at RB. If he was 2 inches taller, he'd be a first choice CB at United. But having seen United's performances recently, its Barthez who needs to be taller, not Gaza.

:p

how about ruud for CB, in my opinion ruud will be a batter CB then GN

How about bailing water with a spoon instead of a bucket since we're sinking?

We need world class defenders if we are going to be consistantly world class. When I think of world class defenders like, Nesta, Cannavaro, Thuram, Neville is not one of them. I think he can do a job if he's called on. And centre half is probably his best position. But I think he's a few years off being a good centre back for United. He should stick to Full back until then.
